Nací y he vivido toda mi vida en Perú, así que uno de mis escritores con los que conocí la literatura y se ha vuelto uno de mis favoritos es Mario Vargas Llosa, y si bien ya he leído bastantes de sus obras, siempre me queda uno que otro por completar. En esta ocasión un título publicado el 2013.

I was born and have lived all my life in Peru, so one of my writers with whom I met literature and has become one of my favorites is Mario Vargas Llosa, and although I have already read quite a few of his works, I always have one or two more to complete. This time a title published in 2013.

Sinopsis: Una obra que nos cuenta dos historias separadas y que nos muestra a personajes enfrentando su situación. En la primera, el empresario piurano Felícito Yanaqué ve como su habitual rutina es sacudida por la extorsión de una mafia local. En la segunda, Ismael Carrera es un anciano que tras triunfar en los negocios, toma una decisión para dar un escarmiento a sus hijos, que desean verlo muerto.

Synopsis: A work that tells two separate stories and shows us characters facing their situation. In the first one, the Piura businessman Felícito Yanaqué sees how his usual routine is shaken by the extortion of a local mafia. In the second, Ismael Carrera is an old man who, after succeeding in business, makes a decision to give a lesson to his children, who want to see him dead.

Si bien al comienzo no parecen historias que te puedan atrapar, el autor logra introducir varios elementos que las hacen interesantes. La primera tiene un enfoque que va más al thriller, y en la segunda historia, gira en una especie de venganza. También hay una historia añadida más, dándole un toque de paranormal.

Although at the beginning they do not seem like stories that can catch you, the author manages to introduce several elements that make them interesting. The first one has a focus that goes more to the thriller, and in the second story, it revolves around a kind of revenge. There is also one more story added, giving it a touch of paranormal.

En ambas historias hay personajes de sus anteriores libros, como Lituma y Rigoberto con su familia. Como siempre los personajes tienen sus claros y oscuros, que los vuelve más reales.

In both stories there are characters from his previous books, such as Lituma and Rigoberto with his family. As always the characters have their light and dark sides, which makes them more real.

Trata los problemas de un Perú moderno, que pasa de tener problemas de escasez a problemas de abundancia, después de una época de crecimiento económico. Por otro lado toca temas como los secretos y pecados pasados, el resentimiento de los hijos, las mafias actuales, la traición, etc.

It deals with the problems of a modern Peru, which goes from having problems of scarcity to problems of abundance, after a period of economic growth. On the other hand, it touches on themes such as past secrets and sins, the resentment of the children, the current mafias, betrayal, etc.

Si bien ambas historias son interesantes, el hecho de que conecten no llega a tener mayor relevancia en lo que sigue, pueden haber sido 2 libros distintos; en todo caso, sirve para crear un ritmo interesante, al tener las 2 historias intercaladas por capítulo.

While both stories are interesting, the fact that they connect does not have much relevance in what follows, they could have been 2 different books; in any case, it serves to create an interesting rhythm, having the 2 stories interspersed per chapter.

No me gusta como hablan ciertos personajes, pues hablan de una forma irreal para el presente. En el caso de Fonchito, un personaje adolescente, se nota demasiado.

I don't like the way certain characters speak, as they speak in a way that is unrealistic for the present. In the case of Fonchito, a teenage character, it is too noticeable.

Es de lectura fácil, salvo algunos momentos donde Vargas Llosa hace su clásica mezcla de conversaciones distintas en párrafos cercanos, que puede resultar dificultoso a algunos. También los giros y misterios a revelarse son interesantes y sorprendentes, incluso se guardan uno para la última página.

It is an easy read, except for a few moments where Vargas Llosa does his classic mix of different conversations in close paragraphs, which may be difficult for some. Also the twists and mysteries to be revealed are interesting and surprising, even saving one for the last page.

En general, es una buena novela, pero no la pondría entre las mejores de Mario Vargas Llosa. Sin embargo, si buscas entretenerte y te interesa la premisa, es una buena opción.

Overall, it's a good novel, but I wouldn't put it among Mario Vargas Llosa's best. However, if you are looking to be entertained and are interested in the premise, it is a good choice.
