Si bien intentó leer cualquier tipo de texto, no me resulta tan fácil cuando un libro tiene muchas páginas, pues me requiere cierto compromiso. En cambio, cuando una obra es breve y toca un tema interesante, ya puede estar en mi lista de próximos a leer, así le tocó a este título. Publicado originalmente en 2007, leí una reedición del 2023.

Although I try to read all kinds of texts, I find it difficult when a book has many pages, as it requires a certain commitment on my part. On the other hand, when a work is short and deals with an interesting topic, it can go straight onto my list of books to read, which is what happened with this title. Originally published in 2007, I read a 2023 reissue.

Sinopsis: Marcos Avilés, un conocido cronista, visitó por un año el penal Santa Mónica, exclusivo para mujeres, ubicado en Lima, Perú. Durante ese año entrevistó a diferentes reas, con lo conseguido artículo la rutina, las desventuras, los pasados, los rencores e increíbles relatos internos. Dando como resultado variadas crónicas, que nos dará una mirada a la vida femenina dentro de los muros de la prisión.

Synopsis: Marcos Avilés, a well-known chronicler, spent a year visiting the Santa Monica prison for women in Lima, Peru. During that year, he interviewed different inmates, learning about their routines, misfortunes, pasts, grudges, and incredible stories. The result is a series of chronicles that give us a glimpse into the lives of women behind prison walls.

Entre las crónicas, sabemos que muchas de las residentes de la prisión son extranjeras, pues muchas acabaron en ese lugar por tratar de transportar droga en aeropuertos. Por otro lado, el deseo de afecto, amor y regalos, les hará planificar las visitas de los varones, generando varios tipos de relaciones.

Among the chronicles, we learn that many of the prison residents are foreigners, as many ended up there for trying to transport drugs at airports. On the other hand, their desire for affection, love, and gifts leads them to plan visits from men, generating various types of relationships.

A diferencia de su contraparte masculina, las chicas tienen otro tipo de restricciones y problemáticas. También la manera que se comunican es distinta, se da mayor uso a las cartas, con ejemplos en el libro. Y obviamente, el lesbianismo es un tema que toca varias crónicas, pues varias chicas, acaban encontrando otra faceta interna en la prisión.

Unlike their male counterparts, the women have other types of restrictions and problems. The way they communicate is also different, with greater use of letters, as shown in examples in the book. And obviously, lesbianism is a topic that comes up in several chronicles, as several women end up discovering another side of themselves in prison.

Entre lo más interesante está el cómo varias de las entrevistadas acabaron en prisión. Desde lo común, que es tratar de pasar droga, hasta ser el chivo expiatorio de una organización criminal, pasando por asesinatos o lo más funesto a mi parecer, el tratar de vender un bebe.

Among the most interesting aspects is how several of the interviewees ended up in prison. From the commonplace, such as trying to smuggle drugs, to being the scapegoat for a criminal organization, to murder, or what I consider the most tragic, trying to sell a baby.

Me hubiera gustado que se hubiese hecho un mayor esfuerzo en fotos y quizás un plano, o un bosquejo de cómo es Santa Mónica, siento que me pierdo un poco con la descripción del lugar. La reedición también permite saber resoluciones o seguimiento a casos desde la edición original.

I would have liked to see more effort put into the photos and perhaps a map or sketch of what Santa Monica is like, as I feel a little lost with the description of the place. The reissue also allows us to find out the outcomes or follow-up to cases since the original edition.

Creo que el libro logra su cometido: ofrecernos una visión de lo que ocurre tras los muros del penal, recordándonos que las reas al final no dejan de ser humanas, con ilusiones, deseos y desaciertos.

I think the book achieves its goal: to offer us a glimpse of what happens behind prison walls, reminding us that inmates are, after all, human beings with hopes, desires, and mistakes.
