As conservatives fought against cancel culture on college campuses, they developed a particular fondness for the First Amendment. It was un-American, they argued, to punish someone for exercising their right to speak freely.
Today, however, many of those same conservatives, now in power in state and federal government, are behind a growing crackdown on political expression at universities, in ways that try to sidestep the Constitution’s free-speech guarantees.

Judge Moves Closer to Holding Trump Officials in Contempt
A federal judge in Washington edged closer on Thursday to holding the Trump administration in contempt for possibly having violated an order he issued last weekend pausing the deportation of scores of Venezuelan immigrants under a rarely invoked wartime statute.
In an angrily written order, the judge, James Boasberg, told the administration to explain to him by Tuesday why officials had not violated his instructions when they allowed two flights of immigrants to continue on to El Salvador even after he directed the planes to return to the United States.

There is always a background level of threats against federal judges. It’s often forgotten that a federal judge was killed in the 2011 attempted assassination of Rep. Gabby Giffords (D-AZ). The son of a federal judge was killed in 2020 in their New Jersey home by a gunman targeting the jurist. What’s different now is the level of rhetorical vitriol coming from the president himself and amplified and extended on his behalf by elected officials and supporters.

Bondi Brings Terrorism Charges for Tesla Attacks
Attorney General Pam Bondi announced the Department of Justice is charging three people for allegedly destroying Tesla cars or properties.
The charges come as Tesla has faced widespread protests and criticism in the last few weeks, tied to its CEO, Elon Musk, and the Department of Government Efficiency’s moves to remake the federal government.
Charging them with arson/vandalism? Yeah, fine. But terrorism? I wouldn’t be surprised if judges and juries refuse to return convictions.

U.S. Sinks to Lowest-Ever Happiness Ranking
While European countries dominate the top 20 in the ranking, there were some exceptions. Despite the war with Hamas, Israel came in at eighth. Costa Rica and Mexico entered the top 10 for the first time, ranking at sixth and 10th respectively.
When it comes to decreasing happiness — or growing unhappiness — the United States has dropped to its lowest-ever position at 24, having previously peaked at 11th place in 2012.
