Worrying Less
First of all, I apologise because for today's blog, I will using a bad example to drive home a good point. Just hang on, you will understand by the time I'm done.
I have this friend of mine who will always tell me that if something is out of his control, the last thing he would do is worry about it because whether he worries or not, the problem will still be there. His point has always been that worrying would do no good, rather it could end up making you fall sick, thereby causing more problems for you.
I understood what he meant but that didn't stop me from thinking of his idea as strange, especially when he showed me the amount of debt he was into on his phone but never allowed it affect his mood or anything like that. I felt if he allowed his problems to show on his face or if he talked about it a bit more, then maybe someone could sympathise with him and maybe help, which he agreed with me before going ahead to tell me that him telling someone about his problems and worrying about it are two seperate things.
He do tell those he feels can help him, but he tries not to worry about it, even when the help doesn't come.
Anyways, fast forward to yesterday, I was hanging out with some of my other friends when this same guy had ran up to us, with a huge smile on his face. Apparently he had played some bets earlier in the day and won big, I'm talking about hundreds of thousands of naira, money big enough to cover almost all of the debts he was in but not all of it.
Later that night, he had reminded me of how he had told me that things will work themselves out and they did.
Although, we'd agree that he got lucky and not everyone gets to win in sport betting when they're in debt, that is why that isn't the main point of today's blog, the main point is how he made sure to keep his cool and worry less because regardless of whatever trouble we may find ourselves in, the truth is that being worried will most likely only make it worse.
Most times we just have to keep it cool and try to think clearly for possible solutions on how to handle the situation. Also, the reason why I had said I would be using a bad example (the bad example being sport betting) is because gambling is never a good thing and I don't want people reading this and getting the wrong idea from it by going to gamble whenever they have a money problem.
That is not the message, and it will never be the message.
Being worried does affect decision making quite abit. I try not to let the worry of consequences affect my decision making but sometimes it just feels like that consequence isn't worth the worry less approach.
Of course situations differ from person to person and event to event. Debt, in my experience, isn't the end of the world and usually if there is still contact and money being transferred from person to debt collector then it is often not a big deal.
Thank you for sharing! This was an interesting story to read.
