The Work of My Hands
I come from a family where many years ago, my dad was able to look at the situation of things happening in the country, the direction they were heading to, for him to know that if someone was to survive in a country like this, fully depending on a white collar job wasn't the right thing to do.
So just like the wise man that he is, he took a decision that ended up becoming one of the best decisions he has taken till this day, a decision that we, his offspring, are still grateful for till this day, he made us go learn certain skills, skills that could always come in handy if we find ourselves in need of money, in a place where there are no office jobs for everyone.
As for his eldest son, he took him to the market where he could learn how to fix computers, my guess for why he did that was because he could tell at the time that in years to come, a lot of people would have a lot of computers in the future, and they would need it getting fixed every now and then.
As for my second brother, his case was actually an interesting one because he ended up learning how to do two things, one of which he has taken to a bigger level and now does it for a living. What's crazy is that we all had picked a skill in the engineering department to learn at the time, although mine ended up not going the way I wanted, so I went from the engineering department, to go learn how to cut hair.
I learned that for more than six months, going to my bosses shop everyday and just standing behind him for hours as I watched him cut hair. At first, it was a very tedious task, but as time went on, I found myself being able to stand in a spot for more than six hours straight, and feeling little to no pains at all.
It was a skill that I enjoyed because for those few minutes anyone sat on my chair, I had the power to make them look beautiful, and that was exactly what I did (after my first few mistakes of course).
As for my little brother, he's the only one who didn't go first into the repair department like the rest of us did, rather than that, he had gone to learn about computers instead, and also plan on furthering that knowledge in the university where he plans on studying computer science.
Now that I think of it, it's funny how the first and last child of my parents followed the part of computers, the first being able to dismantle it and fix any hardware problem that it has, and the second being able to operate it and possibly work his magic in the software department.
Anyway, that is it for me.. Barbing is the one skill that I know for a fact that I could fall back on if I find myself in a situation where the internet no longer exist.
So, all of you acquired handful skills and it can help to earn to survive even without online connectivity. That's good.
Yeah, all thanks to my parents to be honest.
