Police Brutality

Today was one of those days when I got to witness police brutality, but luckily for me, I wasn't the person at the end of their wrath but just another witness who watched and did nothing as these guys in uniform continued to remind us how much of a bad place this country is.

Sometime around noon today, I was on my way back home when I noticed that a vehicle had got surrounded by some officers of the law. Our bus had stopped at the traffic light and was waiting for it to turn green, so we had a couple of seconds to sit and watch as this officer took his rifle and punctured the tires of this vehicle.

For some reason the driver had refused to wind down his window or even get out of the car. He just sat there as he watched everything happen. At first, he couldn't drive off, as some officers were standing right in front of his vehicle, and any attempt to flee could easily injure them, which would then give them the right to open fire at him.

So he stayed calm, but the moment he saw an opening, he immediately drove away, and at first we all thought he had escaped. But when the lights turned green, and we eventually continued the journey, we noticed not too far away that he had been cornered by the same officers again, but this time, they had been able to forcefully drag him out of his vehicle into theirs.

But that wasn't even the crazy part, because not too long after, we saw these officers hitting this guy. One was holding him so that he wouldn't be able to move or fight back, while another had this whip, something called a koboko (which basically is a short whip with more than just one rope attached to it), and he was aggressively flogging this guy with it.

It was a crazy thing to witness, and yet no one said or did anything. Everybody just watched as these men and women in uniform did all they did to that guy before eventually taking him away in their vehicle. It was a very scary thing to watch and goes to show how much the law is being ignored in this country.

I just feel we are so quick to criticize our police officers. They have their own bad misconduct, but the citizens also lack respect for them, and we need to remember they are also humans and they can get agitated really fast.

Based on your explanation, the driver refused to wind down his window and also refused to talk to them, and I believe he must have done something, even if not wrong, to warrant them surrounding or stopping his car.

He could have avoided all that if he had wound down his window and talked to them in a polite way. Even if they didn’t free him, at least it wouldn’t have resulted in them damaging his car or even flogging him.

I hear you, but if things were right, no police officer should have the rights to hit you with a whip. The most he could have done was arrest you and take you down to the station. Flogging you in the middle of the road while his colleagues held you down to stop you from moving, is just next level police brutality.

Him refusing to wind down his glasses or attempting to run away doesn't give them the rights to flog a grown man.. Doing that was crazy.

Let us switch the role, if you were a police officer and an offender is resisting arrest, what would you do?

In this scenario, I think there is only two option, either let him go or use force on him, what would you do?

I feel like you're still not getting my point bro. I have nothing against the officers arresting him, but flogging him was going too far.

And to be honest, I don't even blame the officers, I blame the system. If these police officers had body cameras on them, majority of them won't do the nonsense they do these days because they know disciplinary actions would be carried out against them which might eventually lead to them losing their jobs.

And yes, I know these officers are humans who can get upset, but this is why they go through all sorts of training, training I imagine would also help them in controlling their angers... Because I wouldn't want to imagine a person who gets angry easily to be freely moving around with a loaded weapon.
