It's Not All About Money

Back in the day, I used to be of the opinion that in order for anyone to look good, that they needed to be rich... I also felt that money was all you needed to look and smell good, but over the years, I've come to realize that although money does play an important role, you have to be someone with a good self hygiene, someone who likes to smell and look good, because while you might have all the money in the world, someone with lesser money could still end up looking and smelling better than you will ever look or smell.

For example, I know someone at my hostel who drives a commercial bus and although that business can be a dirty one, due to the fact that you get to go out everyday under the sun and rain to hustle, you also could end up fighting with both customers and street touts who are constantly looking for ways to extort money from these bus drivers.

Yet, whenever this guy comes back from work, he's always looking and smelling great after having his bath. Aside from how good he smells, his room is arguably the best room in the hostel at the moment, due to how well decorated and arranged it is. He's actually the person who made me realize that working as a bus driver in this country isn't exactly a poor man's job...it's not an ideal one, but this people make good money.

Anyway, still at my hostel, I know about three, if not more, ladies that always look and smell terribly whenever they walk pass and one of them happens to own a fast food joint. P.S I'm not saying this is a gender thing, I'm just talking based on personal experience at my hostel.

I know you can say that they (the lady who sells food) probably doesn't make enough money like the bus driver does, but trust me when I say that you don't have to be rich to look good and I say that from my own experience.

Back during my second year in school, I remember I barely had any clothes to wear to school, neither did I have any properties at home. But I always made sure to take proper care of the few things I had, I always made sure that my room was always clean, my bed properly made, plates washed and arranged and all that, unlike some of these people who the moment I walk into their rooms, I start to look at them differently due to how disgusting everything and everywhere is.

People don't know that if you can't take care of things when you have little of it, it will be very difficult to take care of those things when you have a lot of it.

So yeah, when you ask me if someone can be neat, irrespective of if they have money or not, my answer is a short and simple one, yes! But then again, I'm not undermining the importance of money on this topic, but the absence of it, doesn't mean you have to look, smell and live like a pig.

I think that culture and education influences more on that. You don’t need fancy products to be clean.

Exactly. Culture and education does have a lot of influence when it comes to hygiene, also your personality too.

Because one thing I noticed that most unhygienic people have in common is laziness.. Too lazy to get up and do the right thing.

That's true. Cleanliness has nothing to do with financial things. I have seen rich people who live in a place like garbage and I also have seen people who are poor but their room is like a heaven.

Yup, you're absolutely right. Funny how some people like to give excuses like "I don't have money for this and that, and that's why I'm not clean"

When in reality, all they need to do is take a bath and wash their clothes.
