Beyond Schoolyard Bullying

Ever since I got to a certain age, I've always prided myself as someone who wouldn't allow himself to be bullied, and this was mainly because unlike the shy little kid that I was back in high school (I did get bullied a little bit), I was now matured enough to actually stand and speak up for myself, rather than watch someone walk over me like I was nothing.

But then, I soon got to realize that the older we get, the more dangerous this bullies become. Unlike high school where the worse thing a bully could do to you is to beat you up or play silly pranks on you, a bully at this age could go as far as taking your life. And most times, when things starts to get as serious as that, we most times have no other option but to let them have their way, rather than to make the whole thing escalate into a bigger problem.

About two weeks ago, I was upstairs at my hostel watching this two guys on the road exchange words and were almost about to fight. I didn't get the full gist but apparently one of the guys was trying to act like the boss of the other guy and the other guy wasn't taking it. So the other guy had shouted at him and even pushed the guy on the chest before they both walked away in different directions.

About five minutes after that happened, I could see the guy who was pushed on the chest, hide a machete under his sleeve, as he and two other guys who weren't there when he and the other exchanged those words, quickly ran towards the direction the first guy had went.

I didn't need anyone to tell me that if those three guys eventually catch up with that guy, he would be dead. It is things like this that scares me, because nowadays, due to these guys belonging to one confraternity or the other, they tend to always blow things out of proportion because they know that when things do get ugly, they have their entire squad behind them.

And knowing this, especially for someone like me who doesn't belong to anything, we have no choice but to always try to be careful to make sure we don't get noticed and bullied by any of these guys, because even if you can stand your ground against that one guy, you wouldn't be able to do much when he goes and get his group.

So when you think of it, there's a huge possibility that we could still be bullied even at this current age, because we would rather go through that than lose our lives.

It's true. We can be bullied at any age and it has nothing to do. A common example can be office bulling. But if we become powerful enough to protect ourselves we can turn the table.

Powerful enough sometimes would require you becoming someone important in life, like a celebrity or a politician.
