Adapting To Things
Sometimes it's amazing how the human body can quickly adjust to almost any situation or condition it finds itself in. But also, no matter how stunning that is, there are times when it ends up causing our downfall.
A good example is the Nigerian people and its bad government. Things have gotten so bad to the extent that the government doesn't really care about what the people would think anymore, because they know that the worst that could happen is them complaining for a few days about whatever new law they initiate, before they adapt to it and keep on living like nothing happened.
It kind of reminds me of a scene in one of Denzel Washington's movies titled Highest 2 Lowest, where he had wanted to do something ridiculous and said that, well, new stories come out every day, and it's probably going to take less than a week for everyone to forget he even did what he did.
Anyway, inasmuch as there is a bad side to being able to adapt to any situation quickly, there is also a good side to it, one of which I'm currently enjoying. For a while now I've stopped complaining about my living conditions in this camp, not because they got any better (things are still the same way they were when I first got here) but because I've learned to adapt to the living conditions around here.
I used to hate having to queue up in the bathroom to have my bath while other guys stood at the door, watching you naked. But now that really isn't a problem anymore, as I've started getting up early to handle my business before anyone else. For the past week or thereabouts, I've been going to bed by 11pm and getting up by 2am to have my bath.
And yes, I know having to do all these things might have some sort of effect on me during the long run, but I guess I'm comfortable doing it now because I won't be doing it for long. It's currently less than two weeks left for me to get out of this place, so I think I can cope.
There are other things I've put in place to make life here a lot easier, some of which involve constantly having water in my bucket by fetching it around noon and not having to queue for it, or totally avoiding the hostel for an entire day because I now have a spot where I can sit, relax, and only go back to the hostel when it's time for lights out.
Take it from me, adaptation is a beautiful thing when you use it right.
