A book a day keeps reality away
Fun fact : I've only been to the library just once in my life.
When I first read today's contest topic, all I could think of was during my year as a fresher, when this man had walked into my class and introduced himself as a lecturer who was in charge of a course titled the Use of Library or something like that.. It was a course that I later found out wasn't even respected in my school because of how other lecturers spoke about the course.
Apparently, it was a course that we didn't have to fear about failing because as long as we passed our English course, we were good to go and wouldn't carry over the library course.
Anyways, studying that course gave me access into my very first library experience because in other to help us visualize what we were being taught, the lecturer felt it was a good idea to take us to the school's library, a trip I still remember till this day because that was the first and hopefully not the last time I visited a library.
The crazy thing is that looking at how I've only been to the library ones, one will think that I probably hate to read or I prefer reading online, the truth is that I actually prefer a physical book than looking at a phone screen, but back in the day, especially during my obsession with Dan Brown's Robert Langdon series, there weren't any libraries around my area at the time, and so the only thing I could easily access was online and that was what I did.
Unfortunately, I no longer have that same passion for reading books like I did in the past and so, even now that I do have a library around, I don't visit it. I doubt I've even made use of the word 'library' since the beginning of this year... Whenever I need to read something, I pull out my phone or my laptop and just get a pdf version of that stuff, depending on what it is I'm trying to read.
But, in as much as we can find anything and everything online this days, I still do think that libraries are very much needed. And although I don't have any serious or important reason why I feel libraries should still be needed, I just remember the vibe and the feeling I got those many years ago when I went into that library with my course mates.. Something about being in the midst of all those books makes you wanna read and focus on something.
The peace and quiet there helps one to understand perfectly whatever it is they're reading.. Also, personally, I feel a library symbolises a lot more than I can put into words.. Those many books and the billions of knowledge in them shouldn't be something that should be overlooked.
So like I said, a library is still very much needed in today's world.
Despite the kind of information we can get online, it's still important to have library. Knowledge is power therefore when properly stored it would speak volumes later.
So, there's something powerful about reading from a book, than a computer screen.
If there's one reason to make libraries still exist, it's the quietness in that place and making you come in contact with a physical book and still be connected to it as you flip each pages. Yes, we still need libraries in this digital age.
