Mom's Choir Gown Creation
Hello everyone, It's needlework Monday!
I am so excited to share a work I recently completed, an Ankara gown I made for my mom and she totally loved it. Last week in church, the women concluded their one-week program. During such an event, the "mother's choir" always perform, and trust me, our mothers are so gifted! Their voices are so beautiful.
My mom is a proud choir member, and for this special program, the pastor's wife, who happens to be a very fashionable woman, chose a beautiful uniform style for all women to wear. Lucky for my mom she has a fashion designer at home. As soon as she brought the fabric, I got to work on creating her gown.
Sewing process
I started by marking and cutting out the lower and upper parts of the gown directly on the fabric. For the top, I measured and marked out the shoulder, neck, armhole and darts and then cut it out. For the lower part, I marked out hip, waist measurement and then cut it out.
Throughout the process, my mom kept reminding me to make sure a large piece of the fabric was left after cutting out everything, she wanted a big headwrap.
Next, I stitched the darts of the front and back bodice pieces and then attached the lining to them. Once the upper part was done, I moved on to the lower bodice of the front and back and attached lining to it as well.
Once the separate part was ready, I joined the upper and lower bodice pieces together for both the front and back. I fixed the zipper at the centre back. I then set it aside.
I took out the dull face fabric and cut out the 360-degree flare for the design. I cut out a total of eight pieces, including the lining. It's a two-step flare, so I used 2 different lengths(4 and5inches). I then added gum stay to the main flare to give it structure before attaching lining to it. I gave the flare a good press to give it a neat finish.
I then sewed the flare to the upper bodice, aligning it carefully with the dart line. After that, I attached the sleeve and gave the gown a final shaping to ensure it fits perfectly.
When the gown was finally ready, she was so happy putting it on, and I was happy I did not disappoint. I couldn't help but admire the gown as it looked so beautiful on her.
