Week #37 Competition Review: Music Took Us Back to the '30s and '40s!

Hello! Hivers and artists in the Vibes Community, hope you're all doing well.
In this week's competition, artists were asked to explore music from the 1930s and 1940s. At first, I thought it would be easy since songs from that era are often story-driven, performed with emotions, and popularly known through the lens of jazz. But after watching a few entries, I realized just how challenging it was, not only to find the right song but also to capture the essence, tone, and emotional depth of that particular century.

As expected, a few outstanding artists truly nailed the theme. Their entries transported me to a time I’ve only heard about in stories, like those our grandparents used to tell about the clubs, radios, and late-night jazz bars of their youth.

I can’t forget to mention that a few entries seemed to lack effort and intent. It felt like they were submitted with the mindset that they wouldn’t be chosen or even listened to. Some entries didn’t follow the theme either, but regardless, I appreciate the effort and the courage it takes to show up. Even if you're not aiming for the winners' list, your creativity still counts and adds to the beauty of the competition.

So, as always, scrolling through the entries left me entertained, reflective, and musically edified.
And I wouldn’t feel right if I don't highlight two entries that stood out the most for me.
Let’s talk about them in no particular order:

@olgaestrella Lover Man (Billie Holiday Cover)

This was a heartfelt performance by @olgaestrella. It stirred memories in me that aren't even mine, memories of what one of the Islanders went through in one of the TV show series titled Love Island.
Olgaestrella has a beautiful voice and sings with such effortlessness that I was very surprised this was my first time seeing her entry. I also loved the addition of her talented partner on the guitar, which gave her performance more warmth and originality.
I’m not sure if she’s won before, but from this performance she absolutely has the potential to make it into the winner's list.

And then we have an amazing entry from one of the most talented and respected voices in the Vibes community, @verbal-d. When I clicked on the video, I was honestly expecting a rap, but what I got was a whole new energy. Great lyrics, great vocals, and the mood of the song instantly gave off that classic, old-time vibe. I’ve watched a lot of movies that was set in this era, so it was easy to get swept into his performance. This is because what I’ve always loved most about these movies is the soundtracks.

It’s obvious that he's full of surprises, and I can't wait to see him continue blessing us with his gift.

It’s not just these two that got me, there were many others that made me pause and reflect, and even discover songs I never thought I’d listen to in my life. That’s the beauty of this competition. I’m constantly learning, exploring, and expanding my musical taste and knowledge, thanks to these amazing artists and the people behind the Vibes Web3 Music Competition.

So, Week #37 competition officially ended today, July 18th, and now we’re all waiting to see which fifteen artists will make it onto the winner’s list. With over 100 entries submitted this round, we can’t wait to see the outcome, it’s going to be an exciting revelation.
In conclusion, this week was a celebration of history, love and life. It reminded us that even music from nearly a century ago still has the ability to move us today.
