Mad Max: Fury Road: Action Over Storyline??

avatar
Lately, I haven’t had much luck with movies. I usually pick them based on the cover or trailer (not the best habit, I know) but recently none have lived up to my expectations. I also don’t have enough time to get into a full series right now. A few days ago, though, a friend recommended Mad Max: Fury Road. After seeing the movie I didn’t like it at all, yet somehow it stuck with me. It kept replaying in my mind and that’s what made me want to write this review.

About the Movie

Mad Max: Fury Road is a 2015 action packed thriller set in a post-apocalyptic world where resources are scarce and survival is a daily struggle. The story follows Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron), a strong warrior, and Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy), a wasteland survivor, as they team up to take down the tyrannical Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne).

The film’s pacing is fast with barely a moment to catch your breath as the characters navigate the treacherous wasteland. The screenplay was written by Miller, Brendan McCarthy, and Nick Lathouris. The cast features the above name chsracterz and Nicholas Hoult as Nux.

Storyline

The story begins with Max narrating his life in the wasteland. He is hunted both by the living and the dead (the people he failed to save years back). The latter appear to him as trances and intrusive thoughts. Max is captured by one of Joe’s men and used as a blood bank.

Immortan Joe rules the wasteland harshly. He deprives the people of water, claiming that too much of it would make them despise scarcity and treats his wives as valuable property rather than human beings.

Furiosa, a commander whom Immortan Joe trusts deeply escapes with his wives during a supply run. Once Joe realizes, he gathers his warriors and goes in pursuit of her. This is where the audience is thrown into back-to-back action scenes as they navigate the desert.

Furiosa promises Joe’s wives a “Greenland” where there is enough food and water. Max eventually frees himself from Nux, his captor, and joins Furiosa. Nux, one of Joe’s most loyal warriors, finds himself torn between Furiosa and Joe as he struggles with his fanatical allegiance.

Do they make it to the Greenland or do they return to the Citadel? This uncertainty, together with the intense action, is probably what keeps people at the edge of their seats.

My Thoughts

At the end of this movie, I wasn’t happy. I was really mad because I felt like I wasted my time. But a few days later I realized I had missed a lot of things portrayed in the movie mostly because I was expecting too much from it.

The storyline was what I disliked the most. Almost the entire movie took place on the road: Furiosa leading the escape to the Greenland, meeting people who knew her mother, and then returning to the very place they were running from.I really didn’t like it at first, but later I realized it wasn’t just about the desert or wasteland, it was about Immortan Joe, who reminded me of Pharaoh in the story of the children of Israel.

Aside from the simple storyline, some of the filming wasn’t very clear either. There were moments when I couldn’t figure out who had died or who had killed who, especially in the scene where Immortan Joe died.

However, it wouldn’t be fair if I do not highlight the things I actually liked. Because I know many people who loved this movie, and I wouldn’t want to spoil it for those who might enjoy it too. I think my dislike comes mostly from the fact that it’s an action movie, and I’m not a fan of action unless it has a really strong storyline.

That said, I loved the characters. Theh all gave their best in their roles, from Furiosa to Immortan Joe, to Max, Nux, the wives, and even Joe’s War Boys. I also liked the soundtrack and how it was used to build intensity in the scenes.

And then there’s the suspense. The constant chase scenes, the uncertainty of who would survive, and the looming presence of Immortan Joe all created a tension that never really let up. Evry explosion or ambush left me wondering what would happen next, and that’s something the film did very well.

Recommendation

I would recommend this movie mainly to those who love action and apocalyptic films. The storyline isn’t very developed, but you might still enjoy it because the action, visuals, and suspense have a way of sticking in your mind long after you’re done watching.
I would give it 5 out of 10.

What’s your take on Mad Max: Fury Road? Did the nonstop action win you over, or did the storyline leave you unsatisfied like it did for me? Share your perspective, I''d love to hear different views on this one.
