Upcycled Peace Sign Magnet

avatar

Hello friends! I'm back with another upcycled magnet. A couple of weeks ago I wrote about making a watermelon magnet, and that only used about a third of the big foam piece, so I decided to make a peace sign as well:

First, I cut out a big circle. Since the foam was so thick, I just used my scissors like an exacto knife to cut through it. Then I traced another circle inside that to be my guide, and embroidered (not really embroidery? But sewed on a border?) the edge and the middle lines part of the peace sign, using some sport weight/sock weight blue yarn.

Next I chose some buttons from my button tin to use for the open spaces in the middle:

Then I sewed them on, except for the one that I glued on because it was more like a bead shape but it didn't have any holes.

Then I glued a magnet onto the back. This magnet is actually a piece from an old magnetic chess game we had in the 80s to keep us kids entertained on road trips in the car, but I have no idea what happened to the rest of that chess game. Any time we visited family, it meant a bit of a drive because our relatives were in Brooklyn, the Bronx, or upstate NY and we were in New Jersey, so before iPads and cell phones, you had magnetic board games for the kids to play so the pieces wouldn't get lost in the car. :)

So now my watermelon and peace sign are together on my fridge. May there be peace in Palestine. 💜🍉💚

The foam I used is that packaging foam that they use in place of Styrofoam in a lot of things now, so if you have some too and were wondering what to do with it, it makes a nice lightweight magnet you can craft!

Thanks for reading and have a good day. 🙂✌️
