Spam Can Be a Good Sign .:. Ph's Shorts 🩳

I'm finally back on Hive, slowly but surely... I don't know about you, but it's always a struggle for me to come back to the routine after taking a break/vacation... And this time, the break was almost 3 weeks when I had almost no strength (and time) to go online and engage on HIVE... I was "warming up" yesterday by reading some posts, leaving a few comments, and attending the @incublus's show in the Ecency discord... Today, it's time to write a post...

While I was checking out comments for replying, I bumped into one specific comment that caught my attention... It's not that it was super-interesting or such, but it was "different" than others... I know that some people reply automatically to posts without even reading them or using AI to do something like this, but this was different... It was a comment at one of the HHHLive recap posts and it looks like this...

image.png

It's obvious that it's a spam comment, and I think that this kind of comment is mentioned in one of the #HHHLive shows by @godfish or @friendlymoose (not sure who was from you two guys, sorry about that... πŸ™‚) where the person would leave a comment with a link to the external website... What I found interesting is that the account that made it doesn't spam a lot of comments at once, but rather posts 1 comment in 2-3 months!

All that means is that not EVERY post is "targeted" to be spammed by an outbound link, but it's rather selective... In some weird way, it is "approval" that the post has VALUE to the spammer... In our case, the point of posting outbound links to other websites is probably to get a better Google rank... And you get a better ranking on Google if you are linked to GOOD websites/pages... I can't remember that I saw something like this on HIVE, for example, 3-4 years ago...

What could be the conclusion of all this? We can take many, but let me list two... The first one is that maybe our frontends (or one of them) have finally made a step forward in better search engine optimization for their pages... And the second could mean that this specific post had some value that made it stand out among others...

I'm happy if either of the two is true! πŸ˜ƒ If HIVE weren't valuable at all, it wouldn't attract bad actors to try to take advantage of it! On the other side, it is a problem to "fight" against them, but again, it's better to have that kind of issue than to have zero value and no bad actors!

Thank you for your time.

Two sides of the same coin :-)
I don't think hive is useless. The tools and frontends have surely improved.

Cheaters will cheat. Spammers will spam. They will find new ways, so will others to stop them

True... The good and the bad are always there... The same as light and dark... If there weren't dark, we wouldn't know what light is and how important it is... πŸ™‚

The tools and frontends have surely improved.

That's for sure... There is always space for improvements, but we are doing better than before...

What a way to think about this. Haha. Welcome back!

I am still here on and off, but the current routine works for me and my real life stuff.

Thanks! Good to hear that you are still on HIVE!

As we went into this "boring" consolidation phase, I noticed that some of my old friends are missing... I hope they just took a short break like I did...

Hehe, I think for me, the time I have on Hive depends on how busy I am at with my real life, rather than the price action of Hive. Lol!

I think Hive is attractive enough, and the prospects just makes some people want to game the system to their advantage. Maybe the spammer is a smart spammer and just didn't do it in a way that'll get them caught. Hive has keen eyes, and sometimes most of these trends are caught, although it might take time for some to notice it.

Welcome back to Hive. I'm also not as active as I want and that's because of a few new commitments

Maybe the spammer is a smart spammer and just didn't do it in a way that'll get them caught.

That could be the case as doing occasional spam comments is much better than mass-spamming the website... We have a long-term dedicated spammer... πŸ˜‚

Not only for you but for me too it's hard to come back to routine....

I never get such comments on my post well my post has less comments then you but such comments really feel like scam

I wouldn't call them a scam, but rather spam comments... They aren't valuable for you and me, but it can be for the website that is linked inside the comment...

Sometimes, these links are related to scams as it's most common nowadays

It's a lot better on the eye than spam I have seen on other platforms. I have muted most of the automated bots that spam posts as these get annoying after a while.

It's important to combat spam ASAP, as it can turn into a bot-spam website/social network... I remember how important was Akismet plugin for WordPress was back in the days... lol... Revelation... πŸ˜‚

Welcome back! Someone who advertises like this often seek the places where they think they would make a good impact and attract customers for what they are selling, in this case a SEO tool. It may be that they were looking into Liotes, although they would have had to dig a bit since you don't have the link on your profile.

It would be flattering if it searched for Liotes πŸ˜€, but I think it was just about this specific page/post's PR or some other metrics... It's not that there were no other comments on other posts on HIVE, it's just that it happened for the first time for me...

When I had a WP blog, I got such comments every once in a while. That's why I imagine it was for Liotes. Unless they didn't know the front end they were using isn't your own website.

Maybe he replies where there are a lot of people tagged? More chances to views and hence random clicks

Usually, it's not about traffic, but about other important SEO metrics... I suppose the exact reason will stay a mystery... πŸ˜ƒ

I have been working for the last three years and I have not taken a three-week vacation yet. And here, the effort is to post a post every day. The way you have shown this comment is very wrong. Such people should not be on this platform at all, who are posting comments like this. My effort is to read the entire post first and then comment.

The example that I shared is an obvious SPAM, but on the other side, an indicator that HIVE is worth something, as taking time to spam somewhere is also an effort... and doing that where it's worthless makes no sense...

That is an interesting view. I am not sure if its because of SEO, but with all the front-ends, I think SEO optimization will be rough. I just think the current reward structure for posts doesn't push people towards making more SEO optimized content.

The SEO dilemma is a very broad topic... Who to blame for it? Content creators, or frontends... IMO, frontends made improvements compared to a few years ago, and this spam comment could be a good sign... Of course, this theory could be completely wrong... lol...

It feels good to hear you're finally back on Hive. For me, I'm struggling joggling school and my hive routine. I have two months and some weeks left to finally be back here. And I think I find it hard to go back to a routine I've left for a while, that's why I try to show up here at least thrice or more times in a week until I'm fully back.

I hope you will manage to find a balance between your school and HIVE, as it would be a pity to lose you... Your "strategy" of showing up at least a couple of times per week is good, and it could work... Don't give up! πŸ’ͺ
