Scaligero Castle at Lago di Garda, Italy

Do you remember the post where I was writing about the walk out from the Lago di Garda Castle, where I mentioned to you that I would post the rest of the photos "soon"... Well, here we are, 2 weeks later, I'm here to keep my word and to share with you how it was inside the walls of this Castle!

As I said in the previous post, this excursion took place last year in the middle of the summer, and it's perfect for the #tbt community, but this time, it goes to #worldmappin... So, it will come in handy to warm us up in these cold winter days...

03.jpg

Even before entering the castle, or town, I don't know what to call it, as it's not just the castle... Btw, there is another enigma with this place... It can be called a small peninsula on the big Lake Garda but as it's connected with the "mainland" with 2 bridges, it can be called an island too!

04.jpg

05.jpg

06.jpg

Scaligero Castle is situated at the very beginning, probably acting as a defense wall for the town which is behind, or inside the "walls"... It was built in the 14th century by the Della Scala family of Verona, but it was named Scaligero, as that was the "popular" name of the family... I could bet that I saw this castle in some movie, but I didn't find it on the Internet... On the other side, they do have a "summer cinema" in the town, but unfortunately, we didn't have time to check it out...

07.jpg

08.jpg

When we entered the town walls, we turned to the right and saw this water gate, where boats were probably coming into the port...

09.jpg

As you already saw in some of the photos from the last post, the lake itself is huge! When I see a photo like this, I immediately think it is the sea...

10.jpg

11.jpg

12.jpg

13.jpg

Leaving the castle and the lake, and going inside the old town... Even before we headed to this place, after looking at the map and some brochures, I didn't expect that some people actually lived there! I mean, it's a beautiful place, but it's heavily overwhelmed by tourists (the record was over 300K visitors in a year!)... It's like living in a museum... 😃 But, truth be said, most of these apartments are for short-term renting...

14.jpg

15.jpg

Imagine you are going out of your apartment, and you see this beautiful garden...

16.jpg

17.jpg

...and a few steps further, you can go down the stairs that led you to this great beach!!! It does look like a perfect scene for a James Bond movie! 😃 Tbh, I imagined Halle Berry going down those stairs... 🤣

18.jpg

19.jpg

20.jpg

Back to the town... In a few places, there were these narrow gates that would lead you to the other part of the town, or better said street as the whole place is tiny...

21.jpg

22.jpg

Those who like street stickers would appreciate them in this place... For others who don't, it's vandalism... 😃 They were strategically stuck in discreet places... I wasn't ready this time and I didn't have HIVE stickers (or Worldmappin!) to leave the mark... Maybe next time...

23.jpg

24.jpg

25.jpg

We are now on the opposite side of the beach... The shore is completely different and probably the water is much deeper, which makes it perfect as a dock for small boats...

26.jpg

27.jpg

These two ducks were patiently waiting for their transport, ignoring hundreds of tourists passing by... 😃

28.jpg

29.jpg

There it is... Your boat is waiting! All aboard!!!

30.jpg

31.jpg

32.jpg

We decided to leave ducks alone and went back to the town... I have no idea why, but I took a lot of photos of the restaurant's terraces... I suppose I was hungry... 😂 🍴

33.jpg

34.jpg

35.jpg

The sign clearly says "Gelateria" and we all know what that means, but why there are so many huge lollipops outside?

36.jpg

37.jpg

Castle without the ice cream...

38.jpg

Castle WITH the ice cream... 😂

39.jpg

It looks like someone visited that ice cream shop, and didn't mistakenly buy a lollipop... 😃

That would be all from this place! I have run out of photos and stories... If you are in that part of Italy, you have to check out this place... I read that the Scaligero Castle is one of the best-preserved castles in Italy! But, don't do it like us... Take more than a day to explore the place... It is tiny, but it has so many things in the town, and you have to take another day to relax by the lake!

Thank you for your time,

--ph--

We visited this fortified city on our way back from a trip to Tuscany - Venice, Montecatini, Florence, Siena, San Gimiano, Pizza, Cinque Terre, Milan... So maybe because of all the beauties I saw that day, Sirmione didn't seem so magical to me how much it really is.
Now I look at your pictures and remember our tour. Beautiful!

And I confess - we didn't eat ice cream 🙂

Yeah, you made a huge trip and went to some magnificent places in a short period of time, and compared with others, it could be the case that Sirmione stayed in the "shadow" of other places...

While I was writing the post, I was checking GoogleMaps and noticed that I missed almost half of the old city to visit... 🤦‍

Anyway, there will be opportunities to repeat the visit as that area is perfect for taking a break on our regular, summer 3-day road trip... 😃

And I confess - we didn't eat ice cream 🙂

I didn't it eat it either!!! 😃

The short renters might be those who want to enjoy the place more, but then are overwhelmed by the number of the tourists visiting the place. !LOLZ

does the castle still in use by now?
I wonder how rich is the Della Scala family of Verona, if they are living now to be able to build this kind of castle. hahah !LUV

Maybe !PIZZA would be a good addition to the ice cream, or the lollipop. hahah

It was closed to the public in those moments, so we could enjoy its beauty only from the outside... And regarding the family, if they were rich atm, I doubt that they could do something like this again... 😃 It's amazing that this building still stands and it has been over 600 years!!!

I have never been to this place, but the castle seems like an interesting place to go to. I don't think there are many of those castles in the US and I don't think I have been in a real castle.

These castles look so different from what I am used to see on my part of the globe. I love their architecture!!

I suppose that this one is probably older than we "used" to see in other places in Europe... And it is very well preserved, which gives another level of "prettiness" 😃

I always went around there, mainly for Gardaland, never really visited it... If you like that, you should visit Lazise too, it's a small city on the lake, one of the most beautiful there

Big lollipops for sale, I see them still now on sale around

The castle and lake is so nice! The castle reminded me of all the medieval stories that I read when I was young. :)

I also have that feeling that I have already seen it somewhere... That's why I mentioned movies, but it could be the "image" from some books!

The castle is really near the sea? Wow, this is very interesting and the view is very beautiful.

This one is on the lake, but it is coastal as it is ON the lake... Amazing how it is so well-preserved and it has around 600 years!

The idea of living in a town like that, surrounded by history and with a beach just a few steps away, sounds so dreamy. And the gelato shop with the huge lollipops? That’s the perfect way to end a castle visit!

Recently, I've been scared to open your posts as most of them are with snowy thumbnails and I'm afraid I will freeze if I do! 🤣

I admit, I got spoiled by living in Spain... I remember the snowy winters, -25 Degrees Celsius, but I'm not going back to that... lol... 😃

Have a great weekend!!
