Medieval Walk in Finestrat
Hey, Hivers of the #WednesdayWalk community! Long time no see! I have just checked my last post in this community that I did back at the beginning of July!!! In the meantime, I was on vacation, traveled over 5000 km all around Europe, and made dozens of walks, but I didn't do photos of many of them... Luckily, I did a few and will try to post them in this community in the upcoming months... I was doing "categorization" of photos for now, putting dates, picking up good photos... When I was doing that, I noticed that I have some great "walks stories" from before too! So, this is one of those...
If you zoom in on that first picture, you will find out when I did this walk... It was mid-April, and it took place in Finestrat, a small, old town near the place where I live... Like most of these old towns, it has its old part where you can find authentic houses, build by (or in) stone, who knows how many years old... Sometimes they can have 100, 200, or even 300+ years... I'm always amazed by the time how long these stone-built houses can stand!
Of course, this old town's municipality covers bigger areas where you can find new villas, modern houses with pools, etc... As you can see everywhere, I usually don't pay attention to that part... 😂
Every Spring, these old towns in the area organize their own "Medieval markets" where you can see some old occupations and jobs, like blacksmiths, carpenters and how they were doing their jobs before... Also, these markets tend to have stands where they would describe how people were living in those times, what they did in their spare time, etc...
So, one weekend you have the market in one town, the next week in another, and so on... As you will see from the following photos, the old town is narrow and when a lot of people come from other places, it is a problem to find a parking place... So, we parked down by the football stadium (photo above) and climb up to the town on foot... There was a town bus line which took people up, but we rather walk... Just to make this #WednesdayWalk more authentic... 😃
This would be a typical street in Finestrat... Most of the streets are one-way, and some aren't "car-friendly" at all as you can climb with your car on stairs... lol...
Checking out the current location and a bit of history... This square was built in the 18th century... and still standing...
In the labyrinth of narrow old streets, we were trying to find a "main event"... These tables prepared for the evening events are promising signs... We are close...
If you know some Spanish, you can maybe understand some of these signs, but maybe you don't and you are wondering why... 😃 As Finestrat is part of the Valencian Community, many of the signs are written in Valenciano, which is a language similar to Catalan, that is spoken in Catalonia (for example, Barcelona)... From my perspective, it is a mix of Spanish, French and Italian language... and I don't know it, but if you pay attention, you can understand some words...
Oh, I remember this stand very well! They were selling the most delicious baked buns, bread, and scones... Yummy!
Wood-made carousel! Do you see the guy in the black shirt in the middle? No electricity, no gasoline, the guy is pedaling and moving the carousel!
Beautiful, handmade roses from metal... They look the same, but they are all different... Like NFTs! 😃
Another fun place for kids... With good balanced things, you can make a nice, entertaining experience with just a small push...
Animals had a very important role in the everyday life of people living in this area... There is a horseriding culture in Spain, but donkeys were probably even more important and more used... They would carry heavy lifts, do the hard work in the field, etc...
And of course, geese... Feeding a lot of families with eggs, probably the most nutritive food in those, medieval days... When I was a child, I was living in a completely different part of Europe, but I remember that my grandmother had around this number of geese and she would take them out for a walk (to eat)...
As it was getting late, more and more people were coming to the market...
...and for us, it was time to go back home, but before that, we had to find the way to pick up our car... Exploring a bit more of those narrow streets of Finestrat...
...there it is! Behind that white building and that soccer stadium... almost there... 😃
I don't know why, but this house reminds me of one of the Mission Impossible movies (or I think it was one of them), as it was filmed somewhere in Spain when they were chasing Tom Cruise on the motorcycle...
When we were close to the parking, I took the last look at Finestrat... That's where we were! It's like a town on the rock! If you come to this area, I would suggest you visit it as you will have a great "travel to the past" experience...
Thank you for your time,
~ph~

Obviously a very nice small town and the festival is interesting, we have something similar here in our local castle, but this is the first time I have seen a wooden pedal carousel and a galley as a swing.
There were other stands with "traditional" games for kids, like throwing horse shoes, or some wooden table games... But, the carousel was interesting to see that it can run with just one man pedaling 😃
It must really be a great place to visit
It's always interesting to see how it was back in the "old days"...
When I see the history, construction, and age of many of these buildings, I’m reminded what an infant our entire country is by comparison. 😂
Hehehe... On the other side, it's amazing to see how your entire country was built in such a "short period" of time... 😃
I know that many Europeans like to brag and bring up the "history" thing to Americans, but it works in other way around... Having all these buildings, traditions, knowledge, and civilization for so "much longer", and didn't learn to do better... And to keep the "advantage"...
Sometimes a fresh start is better than fixing stuff and having dozens (or not hundreds) of wars...
Traveling all around Europe is cool
I'm sure that you must be familiar with so many places in Europe by now.
As I prefer smaller cities and towns, I visited a lot of them... I'm not that "typical tourist" going through famous cities like Paris, London, Berlin, Rome... I like smaller ones like this, Finestrat, Aix en Provence, Avignon, Vicenza, Padova, etc... 😃
Here it is the post :-) Very nice walk, it reminds me of old times, I was very often on medieval markets in Bavaria, also working there. Love the flair and the old looking, mostly high quality things, they sell.
Lovely place with the old church !LUV

(no space) to get help on Hive. InfoThat's the best! All those products are simple, created from BASIC materials, not fake fur, fake this, fake that... And they last for ages!
The best clothing object that I'm proud of is the leather belt that I got from my grandfather... It is at least 80 years old and handmade... And it's still in "working condition"!
I hope I will have a chance to visit some of them in the future... That, and some Christmas market in Munich, or some other place in Bavaria!
Know what you mean, thats why our grandparents used to say "I dont have the money to buy cheap"
Have some kitchen tools from grandma, they all best to use and without plastics or alu.
Did you know there is a medieval Christmas market in Munich every year? Location "Wittelsbacher Platz" very nice.
And of course the " Tollwood Festival " twice a year, in summer and winter.
Dont miss them whenever you go there :-)
We had a very similar saying to that... "I'm not rich enough to buy cheap things" 😃
Same here! I brought my spoon and fork with me when we moved to Spain... and those two I was using at my grandmother's...
Regarding those markets in Munich, I will probably forget the name, but I will memorize that there are two! 😃 Thanks for the recommendation!
I'm always fascinated with old towns because I love history.
You've captured some great photos, and I know too well just how tedious sorting photos can be.
This was a great presentation and it put me in a pretty good mood:)
Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm glad that you liked the photos and the post!
Nice to have you join the walk again I love old towns with narrow streets like that, although driving there may be a pain
so cool you caught the festival
Thanks for joining the Wednesday Walk :)
Hehehe... That reminded me of when I was driving in a similar town here in Spain, and suddenly, in front of my car I saw downstairs... lol... It was 10 years ago, I have no idea how I get out of that situation, but I know that I don't want to be in the same one again... 😂 Now, I part outside the old towns, and do the walks... 😃
that sounds a tricky situation lets hope it doesnt happen again
I loved this walk. I really like those little Spanish towns that have so many traditions and are so well preserved, although I have never been lucky enough to visit the Valencian region, maybe someday:)
Unbelievable that these days that guy was moving the carousel with a pedal. That's a good exercise, lol.
You have to do it! It is fewer tourists than the Barcelona region, but it has much more "original traditions" preserved... Especially these towns that are not that famous and big...
Hahahaha... It is good exercise, but I suppose it's not harder than climbing a hill on a bike... I'm just guessing.. maybe I'm wrong... Will ask the guy next year... 😂
Awesome walk around this area.
You saw a lot, and funny to see all those animals.
Looking forward to more walks you have done.
It is always good to categorise photos, so you know what you can post. It also, like you found out, gives you even more walk captures you almost forgot about 😊
Have a good evening!
I remember that it was normal to see domestic animals in almost every house, pigs, chickens, rabbits, ducks, and geese... Nowadays, children have no chance to see any animals except dogs and cats... 😞 At least they could see some at this market...
Yes, those things changed dramatically.
I remember having lots of animals in the garden when I was little. Growing up with them. Nowadays you almost don’t see that anymore. Unless one looks at small holdings and people that want to go back to basics and living of their land.
Good they could see them at the market.
Have a nice evening 👋🏻😊
Five thousand kilometers is a very long journey and you see how many days you have been on the journey and it is very good. I really enjoy your travel. Thanks for sharing.
You are welcome! Glad that you liked it.
Thanks.
It really looks like that little town has a vibe going on!
I do envy the little market walk even though you've done it ages ago 😉 although I know you do walk you've bought those nice walking shoes a while back!
Anyways bud have a great one!

(no space) to get help on Hive. InfoIt does have! What is interesting about these old towns in Spain is that at first sight, they are all the same, or at least similar... But, when you step into them and walk through the streets, you will see that each is unique and every single one has its own "vibe" 😃
Hahahaah... I do remember creating a post about shoes, but forgot what was the point of it... lol... Anyways, those weren't as good as they seem... Found other ones for my walks... 😂
Thanks for taking the time to check my post!

Great! I am looking forward to the posts about your vacation, I wonder which cities you travelled!
Unfortunately, I didn't take photos from every place as I was tired from driving a couple of times... But, I do have some photos and will publish them... just to find enough time... 😃
Thanks for the comment and encouragement!
