Follow Me to Follow You .:. 1000 Followers!
I was never into social media content creation and HIVE was my first "choice" to stay and to begin doing it! Never before I was creating long(er) content on the Internet, and, as a matter of fact, I was paying others to create content for my websites... When I found this chain, I was checking out the competition too... One of the first that I noticed and began to use was LBRY Network, today you can also find it as Odysee, which is most popular for video content... But, it's not as effective (income, exposure, community) as 3SPeak is on HIVE...
The point of the first paragraph wasn't to promote LBRY, but more to share my first impression of that social media... As I was among the "early adopters", in those times, you could see almost ALL videos that are uploaded on the last day... That was great as there were more viewers than creators and I was getting tons of comments on my videos... (Btw. I was doing Splinterlands videos and some HIVE videos promoting our chain there... 💪🤔) Most of the comments were the same and the content was always something like this:
Follow me to follow you!

Created in Canva.com
In those times, I was already on HIVE, struggling to get followers, and on LBRY, I got hundreds in just a couple of days!!! But... If the only reason to get a follower was to "milk another follower", do those followers even count? Do they even care about your content? I suppose you already know the answer... They would come on 2-3 next videos and never again...
Around the same time, I had the number of followers on HIVE in my list of #MyHiveGoals, pushing like crazy to get some... Especially after seeing all those Hivers with 3-5K followers on their accounts... After checking some of them, I was thinking that they have to have hundreds of comments on their posts, but I have noticed that they barely have any?! So, where is the catch? The truth is that many people did the same thing as on LBRY when our "legacy chain" was created... Follow me to follow you... Also, many people who were active 5-6 years ago aren't anymore on the chain...
Number of followers is just a number...
A few days ago, I reached 1000 followers on HIVE, which was just a dream when I came to the network... Also, I know many people who did a much better job than me in the same timeframe and had maybe double "my number"... But, I have an excuse for that... 😃 It is just a number... and I really enjoy chatting with all of you in the comment section... Quality engagement is something that I seek in every comment section (not just the one on my posts) and I appreciate people who add value to the posts very much! That's exactly why I try to do the same when I check others' posts and comment on them...

Does the system Follow me to follow you counterproductive?
In my opinion, yes... And not just that, in some way, it is deceiving yourself, and the other person that you follow (just because he/she follows you)... You don't have to follow the person that follows you... Before you begin to throw stones at me, hear me out...
I appreciate every single follower that is following my account! I hope that they click on that FOLLOW button because they have found content that was useful for them and they hope that they will find more (I will try to deliver that!)... If you have followed me, that doesn't mean that I will follow you, or that I HAVE TO do it...
But, to be honest, I do check almost every person who followed me to see what kind of content is creating... If I'm interested, I will follow the person, of course... If it creates content about the niche that I'm not interested in, I will not do it... That should be normal, or?
Let me know your opinion about the follow me to follow you way of getting followers... What is your approach when you click that FOLLOW button? Do you feel "obligated" to follow someone because he/she followed you?
Thank you for your time,
~ph~

On Hive I have actually 2 lists, my follower list who I like to broadly follow and see what content they are producing and I have my favourites list on Ecency where I can follow more closely those I am more actively following. I am glad Ecency made this function.
Yeah, that's a great addition and there is something similar on Peakd, too... It's impossible to follow more than 100-200 active accounts... There is no way that a human being can check all that... 😃

Ah I didnt know about the PeakD thing.
After reading this I think I’m going to have to look into the “second list” option. Like most I found myself following a lot of accounts when starting Hive, trying to find worthy content, but it’s almost impossible to actually keep up and engage with all those creators! I’ll need to invest more time into a “favourite” list so I can become more efficient in engaging! Congrats on the 1k followers!
Yes, it is impossible... As someone else said in the comments, we have to make priorities... With favorites, you check first them, and you have more time, then you go to your "complete" list of followers... :)
I quite agree with you I have 1600 followers and I follow about 300. I follow people who do things that interest me and I think we should all do the same.
Thanks for the comment... I'm glad to see that there are other people who think in the same way as me... :)

I think the same. I have a follower base, but many do not post on Hive anymore. But as @mypathtofire say I have a favorites list on Ecency so I read their posts more or less regularly, like yours :) 😎
Thanks a lot! It looks like the "favorites" option was a very needed one and it's kind of a filter of followers... You have friends, and close friends... :)

The "follow me and I'll follow you" thing, is a waste of time.
I follow people because I like their content. My friends and the people I engage with the most, I have them in my favorites list on Peakd, which is the feed I always try to look at the first place. Then if I have more time, I look at the following feed or in some cases the communities feed if I'm going to curate for other niches in OCD.
That's a good strategy for prioritizing one over others... Without that, we would be in trouble... 😃
I will have to use the community feed more... especially for searching for good posts for curation... Thanks for the reminder! :)

Hahaha there are people who would Mostly do better than us at a set timeframe, the fact that we eventually achieved our goal is better. I think having a group of people who would stay engaged with one over time is the best, irrespective of the numbers. Congratulations on 1k followers.
I quitted with following the number of my followers... It's something that I can't do a lot about... Especially with topics that I cover that are a bit "hard to swallow" for many people... lol... But, that's fine... The most important is to be in good company with similar-minded people... And we are not the majority, that's for sure... 😂

You're right, the most important is to be in good company of people with the same mindset. I think when people have the same goal and mindset, it tends to matter a lot. This is why I like the idea of communities on hive.
I have to agree with your write up. You made me look at my stats by the way so I found out that I have more followers than I would guess. Still they are less than 20% of yours (I joined less than a year after you). During my upcoming adventure some more will probably follow but I won't be counting anyway. I just want to expose people to what my eyes will see during this and how things really are out there while hopefully make other people outside HIVE decide to have a look at it (and hopefully join). Though I see that poshtoken doesn't work lately when I share HIVE stuff on Twitter...
I don't know how this poshtoken works, but I read it's changed lately:
You are supposed to use it on other people's posts and not your own.
Might that be your issue?
The are trying to make people to look around more, I guess..
Oh yeah, that makes sense. Thank you!
👍
Hey, I just checked your blog and followed you! I like the idea of a long trip and taking videos and photos during the journey... I did something similar with my family when we went to Lisbon, but it was just one week's trip and with a car... But, after creating posts it will stay a nice reminder of a great trip!
Will you publish somewhere on your route to the Netherlands? And do you plan to post stuff on HIVE while you are on the road? It would be great if you could make stops during the trip and maybe meet up with some Hivians!
Wish you a safe trip and all the best!

Absolutely not, I think the whole follow for follow idea is pointless and I kind of learned this the hard way.
I was twitch streaming for the first time over lockdown and started doing follow 4 follow with other streamers. Met some cool people and would tune in and watch them, then if I streamed they'd come into mine and chat for minute and then leave, almost as a way of "Getting me back for tuning into their stream." But, they weren't there because they liked what I was doing and if I didn't make it onto their stream to say hello, I'd never see them again.
At the start, it seemed like a good community was forming, but it was all fake. I think I have 130 followers on there, and I get 1-3 viewers if I stream.
Here on Hive, I sometimes get random follows from people, with no comment, or likes and essentially no idea how these mystery people found me, or what piece of content compelled them to follow me, so I just ignore them.
Although, I'd be the same as you in the sense that when I see a follow I go and check out what kind of stuff they do, just to see if it's something I'm into, if it isn't, I don't see the point in following them. Well, in saying that, I do follow people who I have buzzed with in the comment sections of posts, either theirs or mine, so sometimes it isn't just about the content they make.
Thanks for sharing your Twitch experience which is "in line" with my post and the whole follow 4 follow "fake image"... It's not easy to build a community and quality engagement and it usually takes time... Maybe the follow4follow strategy can speed up the process a bit, but I wouldn't say that it is a "crucial" part of growing your audience...
That's a good point! It's not always ONLY about the content...
Cheers!

Well, there's one thing I didn't mention, that relates to Twitch, Instagram, etcetera but I don't think translates to Hive in the same way.
On some of those sites mentioned, I think there's a certain amount of "Credibility" that comes with a large follower account, although, in recent years a large follower count and low interactions on posts is obvious that they're fake followers and kind of takes away from someone online presence.
Agree about credibility on other sites, but it is similar here too... People think that those with 4-5K followers are a "big deal" when that can be completely a fake image... Also, the truth is that we on HIVE have more of those "credibility" numbers... I know that the REPutation number is also a bad example, but HivePower, or what you said, engagement through comments says a lot...
Yeah, I agree there, the Rep number is a good example of someones activitey on chain, and HP is another factor, but they wouldn't really be the same as say the blue checkmark on Twitter prior to being able to buy it.
I always figured that Hives follower count was a little bit different to larger platforms considering there are so many factors like inactive accounts, so it's harder to gage really. So many people went dorment due to the Lagacy events, and then I've spoken to people too who said that when Hives price drops, people tend to go inactive, until everything gets back to normal and the price increases.
Also, I forgot to mention, congratulations on hitting the big four digits!
Unfortunately, that is true and I saw that in 2020... I mean, it's great to get money for creating content, but the point of the network is its social aspect... So, in theory, if there will be no earnings on posts nobody will leave? 😃
Seeing that happening in the past, it looks its a bit better nowadays... We have some hard-core users that survived more than 1 event like that and they try to "prepare" people for that... I'm not that experienced, but I know that building your stake here is much easier when the HIVE price is down, and there are fewer people... So, why would I live then? :)
Thanks for a great chat!
😂 I used to follow quite a bit of people but I think during the migration from steem to hive, I suddenly lost all the people I followed and now I am still struggling to find them again. But also, because some of them have left. I wonder how people got 5k follower on hive but like you said, legacy chain. I wanted to reach 4000 but I am not too ambitious about that. I am pretty chill about all these 😂 though maybe sometimes i have to be bit more serious? IDK.
It's very rare to see people with more than 2-3K followers that are old "only" 3-4 years... I suppose that in the bull run of 2018, the most followers came to those "big accounts"... But as fast as they came, that fast they left... 😞
I don't stress too much about the number of followers... This was an interesting number and that's why I shared it, but I am aware that the topics about which I write, aren't so appealing to the masses... 😂 My posts attract weirdos and not "normies"... I hope this will not offend you... 🤣

I followed you quite some time back just because of Liotes. 😜
I don't bother to ask people to follow me although I'm thankful for any of those who've done so on HIVE for whatever reason they chose to do so.
I do prune my "follow" list every few months though. I remove people who haven't posted/commented anywhere at all in months, or even those who spam reblogs of low quality stuff like there's no tomorrow. I do like to discover the occasional interesting post from reblogs, but not those daily spam posts of giveaways. I don't see much of a need to reblog those.
Hahahaha... You got tricked! 😂 You expected more "alpha info" about Liotes, and I write about completely different things... It was a clickbait move 😂
I did exactly that just a few days ago... Found many people that didn't post over a year or two and there is no sense in having them in the following...
!PIZZA
Haha, I have just followed you after coming across you via @orestistrips ..
I learned that early on and totally agree: the followers on your profile is only a number, but it looks good because it means you might be interesting..
I don't use the follow list, it gets far too busy especially when people reblog posts.
I use the lists mostly to organise people by content.
Still looking what to put you under..🤔😄
Hahaha... This is an interesting experiment... I remember I picked some of the @orestistrips in for the @Ourpick (or not?) but didn't have more contact with him (but I hope I will...)... And now you say that you came here, via him... How? (just curious 😃)
Do you have a "weirdos" category? 😂 Or... "people who are doing everything opposite than others"? Or... "Hive RANTers"? 🤣
I could easily fit in some of those... 😂
Thanks for the follow! Appreciate it... From the first contact, it looks like we could have fun in the future... 😄

@ourpick is you? I've been following that for some time, and there is that nasty term again.. f... ha
Nice to meet you! I see you are a witness.. I have still to vote, but no idea how or for whom.. Are you a good choice? 🤔😄
Yes, that is the curation sub-project that I run with my friend @achim03, under the bigger project @Liotes...
Nice to meet you, too! I am a Hive-Engine witness, which is different than Hive witnesses as it serves to "secure" the 2nd layer here, and not the main chain... If you don't have staked WORKERBEE tokens, you don't have to bother to understand it and vote... 😃
Have a great weekend!
Achim? German or such like by any chance?
Think one of my early posts was on your reports..
I will forget about that part of the witness section immediately then.. Less to worry about, there is enough here as it is..
Have a lovely.. well, day? evening? Take your pick! 😁👋
You were close, Swiss... 😃
AH! Sehr schön! Haha
Follower numbers can be quite deceptive... it's often not an indication of engagement. The SEC completely destroyed LBRY... and their token. Legal fees hit them hard. Not much happening there, in my opinion... at least, for now.
Unfortunately, it is like you said... the SEC killed LBRY and the biggest mistake was trying to be "fair" with them... They try to run the legal business, and SEC killed them... The US is forcing blockchain and crypto companies out of the country...

That's cool! I do the same; I use Actifit as an incentive to post daily.. it's good practice, and as you say, an excellent diary!
Keep it up! 😀
Congrats on reaching 1000 followers! Nope, I haven't done follow for follow although I know it is practiced, as are other methods to inflate your follower numbers.
I agree, quality comments are a much better indicator of someone who is interested in the content and takes the time to comment more than a few words. Unfortunately, I feel this won't be a good enough indicator for a long time. I imagine pretty soon there will be some ChatGPT-like accounts on social media (not necessarily Hive), which will put out great comments with better consistency. And without getting tired of doing it.
I'm afraid you are right about the future ChatGPT-like bots who will create long comments too and "hide" some real numbers... It looks like we humans like to create a fake reality for ourselves... We are too scared to live life as it is...
I think I spent all my !PIZZA s... but let's try one more time 😃
I have to admit that I kind of lost track of the "follow" parameter. I would say I spend 30% of my time creating posts and 60% of the time to answer all the comments... Then I try to read a couple of posts per day but it's mostly always the same people... This is far from ideal and I would love to have more time to grow the follower list and interact with them....
It's not that simple the whole thing in social media... Some people like to create stuff, others like to read/watch... And some like them both... But the thing with the last category is that they need double the time and it can be too much... I try to engage with others and try to find different authors, but it sometimes takes a lot of time...
Time is definitely the scarce resource here...
I also finish all my work first and then open something else. If I take up something else first, then time is wasted and the work here cannot be completed. Starting tomorrow I'm starting a new post where I'll tell you what I've been up to all day.
That's a good strategy... ;) I have a daily TO-DO list and trying to follow tasks on it... It helps me a lot!

Followers oh how that has changed over the years.
My problem with following someone is that I want to engage on their posts, these people that follow thousands of people can't engage!
I have lost my way on Hive, I would normally have a way I would do activities, but often I can get on Hive and engage and totally forget I was on there to write a post.
So people write first then engage, or write and don't engage.
My followers list I try to keep to what I can manage and at least visit.
Follow me follow you, it's not twitter here, so I don't blindly follow back anymore.
After reading your comment, I had to peek at your followers/following stats and it looks like you are killing it! Over 1.4K followers in a relatively short period is a significant number! Also, got a thank you for following me as it does look like you aren't following blindly other people as you keep your following number low... :)
Speaking of this, I was doing it before without any order and as you said, I would come to write a post and finish by commenting on dozens of posts without doing mine... 🤣 So, I had to follow the rule that you pointed out.. in my case... "first post then reply and engage"

Oh, yeah... I remember the time when I was pushing commenting on dozens of posts daily, chasing Asher's Top 10 list of engagement... And I was there a few times... until I burned out... 😂
Oh yes the HEL I won that a few times, but on ecency app and site there is a leaderboard with users and points, I am sure I got a lot of followers from topping that for weeks on end..
The notion of follow for follow is annoying lol. It’s better to only follow who you’re actually going to engage with in my opinion! I have a lot of people that post here in the rant community but I don’t know if I would follow them outside of it. Doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy their content in the community though!
Congrats on hitting 1k! I did that sometime recently as well but sadly the engagement hasn’t gone up considerably which is sad but that happens hahaha. Good to be present though and get to what we can for content!

That is also a valid point! If we don't follow someone, it doesn't mean that we can't like the content... I like to read occasionally posts that are "out of my niche", just to get a different view, but maybe I'm not ready to do it every day...
Thanks for this awesome community! As I mentioned to @macchiata, I feel here at home... 😂
