THE HASSLES OF PHYSICAL LEARNING

I remember some years back, during the reign of COVID-19. Many schools were forced to shut down as a control measure to limit the rate of social interaction. However, learning still continued. Some schools found a way to incorporate virtual learning into their system of learning. They continued their academic calendar through these virtual platforms, and it was a lot easier. I remembered enjoying school like never before. Having school being brought to the comfort of your home was an out-of-the-world experience for me.

It made learning more fun, less stressful and easier. The videos were saved on my phone. I could go online whenever I wanted and rewatch whatever topic I didn't quite understand or just refresh my memory from what was previously taught to us. Physical learning could never offer us such privileges. Once you've missed a class, you've missed it. There was no reliving the experience. Also ,the problem of transportation, fussing over the right clothes or uniform to wear to school were out of the picture. Things really became a lot easier. These are just some of the few perks of virtual learning.

I know most people would argue to no end that virtual learning provides little to no face-to-face interaction, technical difficulties, inadequate structured environment for learning, and many more. However, it's time we all woke up. The world is evolving and constantly changing. Technological advancement is at its peak. Presently, there is now what we call video conferencing that has solved the problem of distancing. Two individual that are miles apart can easily communicate with face-to-face interaction through video conferencing.

Also, the problem of technical difficulties can easily be solved. There are now new and advanced gadgets that make the virtual learning experience a walk in the park. ICT gadgets like an iPad, laptop, desktop or a smartphone can make the learning experience a whole lot easier. Personally, before the COVID-19, I found it difficult to convince my parents about the importance of me having a smartphone. They deaf-tuned me, insisting I was too young to own such a gadget. However, since the incorporation of virtual learning into schools, smartphones have now become a necessity every students must own to successfully thrive in their academic life. Currently, my parents are now in tune with the idea of getting my little sister a smartphone of her own.

The hassles physical learning has brought to our doorsteps cannot be overstated. Some of which includes:

  • It is Time Constricting: Physical learning often has a specific schedule and timeframe, which makes it quite stressful and difficult for people who have other indulgements, like a pregnant or lactating mother, a full-time entrepreneur, a family man and many others.

  • Easy Distractions: In a controlled physical learning space, it is easier to entertain various forms of distractions from bullies or unserious students. Also, weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances can indefinitely cause classes to be canceled or limit students from coming to classes.

  • It is more costly: From the cost of enrollment, transportation, down to the cost of purchasing uniforms, writing materials and all other unnecessary upkeep, physical learning can indeed be quite a hassle.

If your parents were to read this post, I’m sure they would get you and your little sister whatever learning devices you ask and not just smartphones because this is very convincing. Anyway, you are right. The world is changing whether we like it or not and it’s high time we got used to that virtual life.
