Years of None

10 thousand years experience in ... bullshitting.
That is the only thing I hear when people start yapping about their years of experience in "X".

It really isn't a great indicator in anything but time.
It hardly means someone has any quality knowledge of their job either.
I could say I have 12 years Dev experience because I did do a bit of HTML way back but I also know that I only did about a month of coding before not doing anything for a year at a time.

This would bring my active moments of experience down to about 6 maybe 8 years.

Then there is the case of depth. I never really needed to dive too deep so I would be more honest if I said "I built basic websites" for at least 3 years.

So now what remains is that I only have actual multi-language and dev experience for 5 years.

Of that 5 I could chunk it even more, frankly it depends how insecure I want to be.

Which is not the case with the most prominent braggadoscious of types. They will happily tell you they have 20 years design experience and deliver the poop emoji as an original logo.

The reverse is also true I think where people on Youtube would say they have 1 year experience then build the craziest stuff , likely in an attempt to put the viewers in awe and obviously lure in new people who they sell their "magic course".

I am sure there are some who just have a great affinity for certain types of jobs but they should also be honest and say "Well you know I have been fiddling with this since I was 5"

Not that I mind the people who have more experience than what they say they do, because they tend to deliver.

It is the ones who think just calling yourself a "developer", "designer", "hairdresser" , "mechanic" for 20 years actually makes you one.

If anything I think a person should always undersell and over deliver. It just makes things simpler for all involved.
