The absurdity of Belgian income tax!

Belgium has on of the highest national debt to GDP ratios and it is the taxation champion of the world. And yet nothing seems to change about the debt problem. To the contrary, it gets worse every year, with huge deficits!

But if you’re American or even Dutch it is hard to understand how this exactly works.

We have a progressive taxation system, in which a raise of 200 EUR bruto gives you at max an 96 EUR raise netto…

No wonder people in Belgium are fed with things and vote for right wing parties. Things really need to change, and fast.

I still have PTSD of the whole dictionary with codes you get every year. I can only compare them to filing Finnish and Lithuanian taxes but between those 3 Belgium is the worse by a stretch. Hardly possible to understand properly, no one can help you with anything, and if you make a mistake they go for basically everything you got.

They are definitely missing out on taxes because:

  • It is too complicated so people just don't file (part of) their taxes
  • It feels like they discouraging people from increasing their income
  • A lot of people that feel like they hit a wall just leave, taxes filed somewhere else are simply lost

The saddest part is that everything is so complicated that it is beyond repair, and the only way to make up for those lost taxes is on those that stay quiet and nicely pay half of their wage every month
