The day is ending, and today was the celebration of Youth Day in Venezuela.

Why February 12th?

The celebration is historically based on the Battle of La Victoria in 1814. During the War of Independence, General José Félix Ribas did not have enough professional soldiers to defend the city of La Victoria against the Spanish army, which was already on its way.

Losing the position would have been disastrous, so he opened a recruitment drive among the population, and some 1,500 teenagers came forward, many of them students and seminarians who had never held a rifle before.

They were motivated more by youthful idealism than by a firm understanding of what a battle to the death meant. Despite their lack of training, these young people fought and managed to defeat the enemy troops, and obviously, this did not come without sacrificing lives.

In commemoration of this feat, in 1947 the Venezuelan Constituent Assembly officially decreed this date as "Youth Day," so that the sacrifice of those young people would be remembered.

February 12th is not just another date on the Venezuelan calendar. It is a date with history, with soul, and with a powerful message: youth as the driving force of change. Está terminando el día y hoy fue la Celebración del Día de la Juventud en Venezuela.

¿Por qué el 12 de febrero?

La celebración se fundamenta históricamente en la Batalla de La Victoria de 1814. Durante la Guerra de Independencia, el general José Félix Ribas no contaba con suficientes soldados profesionales para defender la ciudad de La Victoria contra el ejército español que ya estaba en camino. Se perdería la posición y todo iría a peor en ese caso, así que abrió una recluta entre la población, y se presentaron unos 1.500 adolescentes, muchos de ellos estudiantes y seminaristas que nunca habían tomado un fusil.

Se motivaron más por un idealismo juvenil que por un conocimiento certero de lo que significa una batalla a muerte. A pesar de la falta de entrenamiento, estos jóvenes lucharon y lograron derrotar a las tropas enemigas, y obviamente eso no fue sin sacrificar vidas.

En conmemoración de esta hazaña, en 1947 la Asamblea Constituyente de Venezuela decretó oficialmente esta fecha como el "Día de la Juventud", para que el sacrificio de aquellos jóvenes fuera recordado.
