Why is Data So Costly Today?
Greetings, everyone!
We are in a world where everyone depends on the Internet for business, school, communication, and entertainment, especially on the social media platforms where we all are involved. We like to have fun by seeing reels and other things performed by the Nigerians that could make us have a good time.
Social media is a big place where people are now. I appreciate the Internet Service Providers - (ISPs) that sell Internet service companies, businesses, and homes. Like MTN, Airtel, GLO, and many others not mentioned. This company is behind the connection of the internet that is all over the globe, and they are making it and doing serious business in the world. Since a lot of people are on social media handles today, the rising cost of data has skyrocketed to put things in place for quality internet delivery for people who need it. And for people to have good entertainment, they have to subscribe to a huge amount of data that will take them, and content creators who want to have quality performance, have to subscribe to it too.
A few months ago the price of Data skyrocketed to the amount which I was perplexed. Before I used to subscribe to 20GB at #5,000 monthly, that's in Nigerian Naira, but now I can't subscribe to that amount to gain. Instead, I subscribed weekly, which used to be #1,500. Now it is #2,500. Imagine subscribing to this amount every week, you know how much it will amount to it
I want to share some points about why data is so costly today?
Limited Government Support
When the Government does not support telecommunication companies in building and maintaining the company, there is every possibility that the billing will passed down to the consumers, which is the reason we have a price hike today. So the company is the one hiring equipment for the internet connection like the satellites, fibers, towers, and the rest of the equipment. Data will reduced when it gets back to its normal price.
Taxes
The government also imposed taxes on the company and this affected them too. Instead of the company benefiting from the government, it's them benefiting without any support. This is also the cause of price hikes for consumers. No man can stay without data unless you don't have friends to communicate with.
Increased demand
A lot of people are on social media for specific reasons, some attending classes, zoom meetings, streaming, and working from home; all of these activities require data and a stable internet connection. For the company to manage this congestion, they have to increase prices for increased demand.
Foreign exchange rate
Most of the equipment is bought in foreign currency, and when the price of purchasing their goods is cheaper in foreign currency it will be easier for them to maintain their services while in their local currency it will be expensive for them to maintain service here. This has been the reason behind the price hikes in data. I also noticed that in MTN callertune, a hundred Naira airtime finishes without taking up to 5 minutes.
These has been the root cause of expensive data. Make your money and subscribe to your data and keep your hope alive that things will turn out good one day.
Thank you for reading through.
