The text says like this:

For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God; not by works, so that no one can boast.

Ephesians 2:8-9

1. "For by grace you have been saved..."

The word "grace" (from the Greek "charis") refers to God's unmerited favor. It is a free gift that God gives to people, not based on their merits or actions, but on His love and mercy. The idea here is that salvation cannot be earned or deserved; It is an act of divine goodness.

2. "...through faith..."

"Faith" (from the Greek "pistis") is trust and belief in God and Jesus Christ as the Savior. In the Christian context, faith is not simply an intellectual assent, but an active trust and dependence on Christ for salvation. Faith is the means through which God's grace is received. It is not the cause of salvation, but it is the channel through which grace is accessed.

3. "...and this is not from you, it is a gift from God..."

This part emphasizes that both grace and the ability to have faith do not come from oneself, but are gifts from God. Salvation is totally dependent on divine initiative and provision, not human efforts. This underscores the sovereignty of God in the salvation process.

4. "...not by works..."

"Works" refer to human actions, especially in the context of keeping the Law or doing good deeds to gain favor with God. Paul makes it clear that good works are not the means to salvation. If salvation could be obtained by works, then people could boast of their achievements.

5. "...so that no one can boast."

The consequence of salvation by grace through faith is that no one can boast of having achieved their own salvation. All the credit and glory goes to God. This final phrase eliminates any possibility of human pride in the process of salvation, emphasizing that it is exclusively by the work of God.

Context and Application

In the context of the letter to the Ephesians, Paul is speaking to a community of believers that includes both Jews and Gentiles. His message that salvation is by grace through faith would have been especially important for Gentiles, who were not under the Mosaic Law, and for Jews, who might have been tempted to trust in the fulfillment of the Law.
