From the moment you set foot on its soil, I felt that this was not just an ancient city, but that it still carried a living history. Leaving traces of past lives, Lryboton Kome Ancient City is not a place that grew and developed randomly; it is a city built by hardworking people who used their intellect.

Nestled among the forested hills of Antalya, behind stone walls that have withstood the test of time, a quiet ancient settlement shaped by production rises on a mountainside. This rising city leads to one of the hidden treasures of the past, nestled in nature, in the Varsak region of Antalya's Kepez district. The ancient city of Lyrboton Kome, formerly used as an olive oil factory in Antalya, has left behind many historical remains from its thousands of years of existence. It's located approximately 40 minutes from Antalya city center, within the borders of the Kepez district. As we drove towards the Varsak neighborhood in Antalya's Kepez district, the asphalt gradually narrowed and turned into a dirt road. We parked our cars at a certain point and started walking. The city noise had given way to the gentle sound of a breeze. The ancient city is situated on top of a mountainside in Varsak. To reach the city, we walked uphill on a dirt road for about fifteen minutes.

Antalya'nın ormanlık tepeleri arasında, zamanın sınavına dayanmış taş duvarların ardında, üretimle şekillenmiş sessiz bir antik yerleşim yeri, bir dağ yamacında yükseliyor. Kente ulaşmak için Antalya şehir merkezinden yaklaşık 40 dakika uzaklıkta, Kepez ilçesi sınırları içinde bulunuyor. Antalya'nın Kepez ilçesindeki Varsak mahallesine doğru giderken, asfalt yavaş yavaş daraldı ve toprak yola dönüştü. Arabalarımızı belirli bir noktada park edip yürümeye başladık. Şehir gürültüsü yerini artık hafif bir rüzgar sesine bırakmıştı. Antik kent, Varsak'ta bir dağ yamacının tepesinde yer alıyor. Kente ulaşmak için yaklaşık on beş dakika boyunca toprak bir yolda yokuş yukarı yürüdük.

This city, nestled among olive trees on a hilltop, seems to speak through its stones. This trip was very important for me. As soon as we entered the city, we were transported back in time as we saw the life lived there and the artifacts left behind. Knowing that this was one of the most important olive oil production centers in the Mediterranean increased our curiosity and made the paths we walked more meaningful. While wandering through the ancient city, we saw ruined historical houses, historical walls, arches, and canals. The cisterns, which met the water needs and were built at specific points, are among the most striking features.

Tepede zeytin ağaçlarının arasına kurulmuş bu şehir, taşlarıyla adeta konuşuyor. Bu gezi benim için çok önemliydi. Şehre girer girmez, oradaki yaşamı ve geride kalan eserleri görünce zamanda geriye yolculuk yaptık. The town's information board details how the olives here were processed, stored, and sent to the ancient city of Perge. Instead of just ruined houses, a fully-fledged industrial production center was established here. Olives from the surrounding olive trees were harvested, pressed in stone mills, and the oil was stored and transported via canals to the ancient city of Perge. Walking around, one can't help but wonder: How did the people who walked among these stones thousands of years ago establish this system? Walking through a hidden place, full of stories yet unknown to anyone, where production and trade flowed uninterrupted, is a great pleasure. As we ascended the high hills of Kepez, the semi-open paths merged with the scent of pine forests. As we explored, the piles of stones rising from the greenery revealed, at first glance, not an ancient city, but a landscape bearing the traces of a millennia-old production culture. Red-earthed paths formed among the historical ruins, guiding us between large rocks.

When you reach the highest point of the ancient city, Antalya lies spread out below you. On one side, the whitish view of the Bey Mountains, and on the other, a wide, flat landscape stretching towards the sea... Here, as the sun sets, the color of the stones changes; gray tones give way to golden yellow. The city grew and developed thanks to the ancient economy established by a woman. One of the reasons that makes the ancient city of Lryboton Kome special is the story of Arete, a priestess considered one of its founders. According to the information panel at the entrance, Arete established an olive foundation here and managed to systematize production. She also had a tower built to honor Roman Emperor Domitian and Artemis of Perge. Today, standing around that tower, we understand very well that this is not just made of stones. This city became a place where women's labor, production, and faith coexisted simultaneously.

The stones of Lryboton Kome seem to silently await, as if wanting to convey to us the history, knowledge, and lives of the people of the past. This city, which brings history and nature together, is like an open-air museum showcasing how human labor has continued for thousands of years. During our tour, I want to show you the historical remains we encounter one by one.

This ancient city is spread over such a vast area that wide, red-earthed paths lead into nature. You can circle around any path and still end up back at the same point. Historical remains intertwined with nature have left traces of past life. The plants, trees, and grasses covering some of the stones seem to be integrated with the past. The slightly mossy stones and weeds growing between them further enhance the beauty of the surroundings.

Geçtiğimiz yollarda toprağın üstünde hafif yosunlaşmış taşlar ve aralarına sokulan bitki otları doğayı daha da güzelleştiriyor.

While walking through nature among historical ruins, we came across an old well. Built on top of a round stone, the well was quite striking. They had named it Fatma Ana Well. The names Fatma Efe and Hasan Efe were inscribed at the wellhead. There was water in the well. We took a break around the well. Everyone brought out the food and drinks they had brought. We lit a fire and had a barbecue. Even if you weren't hungry, the smell of the barbecue and the beauty of the fire in nature alone could make you hungry in such beautiful nature. After the break, we continued walking through nature on the flat, wide, red-earth paths for our return journey.

Doğanın içinde tarihi kalıntılar arasında gezerken karşımıza eski yapı bir kuyu çıktı. Yuvarlak bir taşın üstüne yapılan kuyu oldukça dikkat çekiyor. Kuyuya Fatma Ana Kuyusu adını vermişler. Kuyunun başında Fatma Efe ve Hasan Efe adları yazıyordu. Kuyunun içinde su da vardı. Kuyunun etrafında mola verdik. Herkes yanında getirdiği yiyevek ve içecekleri çıkardı. Burada ateş yakarak, mangal yaptık. Böylesi güzel bir doğanın içinde aç olmasanız bile, mangalın kokusu ateşin doğadaki güzelliği bile insanı açıktırıyor. Moladan sonra dönüş yolu için yine kırmızı topraklı düz geniş yollarda doğanın içinde yürümeye devam ettik.

Lryboton Kome Ancient City stands quietly on a hilltop in Antalya, perhaps the quietest yet most vibrant with its rich history. Today, Lryboton Kome seems lost amidst the wind and olive trees, but it still whispers of a life intertwined with production from the past. Perhaps the true value of Lryboton Kome lies not so much in its magnificent and unique structures, but in the very story of labor, production, and continuity that it silently tries to tell and show us.
