Fortunately, I didn't have to actually buy any. I've gathered bits and pieces over the years. Working in construction gave me access to all sorts of useful 'garbage'. I also found that I didn't need to completely cover the plants, I just had to put up a border fence too tall for them to easily jump over, and leave pointy ends of the wire sticking up.

As my gardens have grown over the years, I've had some success with planting a border of things that they don't seem to like. Onions and celery both work well to discourage rodents in my area. I've heard some people have luck with lavender, rosemary, and other mint family plants.

Something I've recently discovered that works well with rabbits and groundhogs is to use the cheap plastic bird netting, not to cover the plants, but laid on the ground as a border around them. Animals do not seem to like walking through the stuff.
