"Annual Spring Buffet March" | A Roaming Herd of Sheep in the Albanian Countryside

These photos are from one of the free roaming herds so common in Southern Albania, Europe. The sheep's annual spring buffet has been going on for a few weeks now, and the herd comes by every day around noon to feast!

It's an energetic wave of pure life when you hear them come closer!

Notice also the waterfall and charming growth of green moss on that concrete pillar. Water has been leaking from this aqueduct for years and well, nature always finds a way!

You can hear the bells around their neck a good distance away so we always know when their lunchtime is. Then again, they seem to eat all day, and why wouldn't they? The whole environment is one giant buffet platter of greens, grasses and herbs! No wonder their cheese is one of the best you can find.

In 2024 these animals still feed wild, and you really taste the difference in the cheese!

The sheep are usually accompanied by a shepherd and a few herding dogs. But as long as you don't make any hasty movements, the dogs are quite chill! "Just doing my job here"

You can see the shepherd with a red coart in this last picture if you look closely. The dogs are somewhere off screen, safeguarding the perimeter as usual.

Well, just a little peak into common everyday life in Southern Albania, live from the the annual sea of green.
