To live, and to let live.

Now what do health, squirrels, fruits and humans have in common?
081.jpg

Hang on, as I will show you it all below.

We call them "Heaven's apples", but they are in fact the fruit of a Strawberry Guava tree. (Psidium cattleyanum).

These small fruit seeds are very healthy, as you will see in the link below.

Products made from P. cattleyanum are not commercially available because of a lack of market and the heavy presence of fruit flies. This renders the fruits inedible soon after they are picked. Its seeds have many health benefits, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties, in addition to a high amount of vitamin C.

This is what the tree looks like in our front garden.

Okay, now let me show you some granadillas close by the strawberry tree.
009.JPG

Strawberry tree at the left, and granadilla fence on the right. We don't pick the granadillas, as when they are ripe, the strong winds blow them off for us.
024.JPG

Live, and let live. We place the smaller ripe granadilla fruits and some acorns here in the flower bed for hungry little visitors.

Here you can see one visitor below.

And this one was its mate.
074.JPG

Finally, we stash the ripe granadillas in our kitchen to wait for the strawberry tree's fruits to ripen, as then my wife makes a most delicious juice that tastes like strawberries, guavas, and granadillas.
070.JPG

No, don't ask me, as we haven't given the juice a name yet, but let me tell you that it's a very healthy mix, and a bonus is that it's all organic, as we use no pesticides in our gardens. I think that my wife will also make some tarts with the seeds this time round, as an extra healthy bonus.

I often joke that when the seeds grow in my stomach, she mustn't be surprised if I awake one morning to find a tree growing out of my ear :)

Another issue about this live and let live action, is that we have a team of naughty youngsters that insist on raiding the granadilla fence when they think that we are not around. I did the same in my younger days, but the difference is that we stole ripe fruits. The youngsters here pick green granadillas, and they run away eating them. I just hope that they have cast iron stomachs, or maybe they eat the unripe/green fruit to get booked off from school with upset stomachs:))
Such is life.

I hope you have enjoyed the pictures and the story.

Yeah, I think that our superstitious parents told us that fable about the seeds. Maybe someone swallowed the pip of an avocado. !LOL

I can still remember the stomach aches of swallowing green mulberries from a neighbor's garden.
Yep, the visitors are all putting on weight here.

Bumper crop of granadillas, never seen the strawberry guava, these fruits make delicious syrups to preserve and store.

Season here for guavadillas just starting with first few dropping to the floor once again, time is right for February. Soon we will be sipping away at delicious homemade juice again. I make ours with lemons.

Let Marian enjoy the kitchen on cool days !LUV

So now there you have it. You have guavadillas which I have never seen, and we have the strawberry guava that you have never seen. This is a very interesting country, as there are so many differences.
Glad to know that you will also have a lot for juices.

Only a few cool days here lately, as Feb is our hottest month. Already into the 30Cs.

February is normally scorching hot here, hope more cold fronts sneak through the back door.

Homemade juice so refreshing, waiting and watching to collect enough to start 1st batch.

Oh yeah, I know how we struggled when we worked on the high towers of the powerline over there. the. A proverbial oven.

We picked the first batch today, and we discovered a tiny golden beetle. Never seen one before and they obviously also favor the strawberry-guava fruits.

!PIZZA and !LUV also to you guys.

Slow boil again today, tomorrow perhaps a bit cooler, take the weather as it comes try plan around it.

Now first fruits showing their should be some fall to the ground, hopefully the monkeys don't test too many before fully ripe.

Yep, we are also getting hotter here again, and had to get a small humidifier in the hope that it will help with the sore throats that we get every night from the dry air.

Reminds me of the games that we had with the squirrels gunning for the dropped fruits. In your case it is the monkeys. !LOLZ

Humidifier is the last thing you need here, summer colds doing the rounds with hot/cold sudden temperature changes, take care!

On the very hot nights, we run the aircon for short periods, and then it dries the air out. Sore throats both of us, and now the humidifier fixes that. Most of the people here walking around coughing and spluttering due to the quick weather changes. !LOL

Never sleep under an aircon, a few fans suffice at night with windows open, one thing I cannot do is sleep in a closed up room.

No windows open here, as a ton of mozzies will be sure to attack. Door however is wide open, and aircon run intermittently for only short periods.

Mozzies eat me no matter where I am, they love my blood. Tabbard and/or Peaceful Sleep have become so expensive, have to have one on hand in case to spray directly onto clothing!
