The raptors are hungry.
Birds of prey need to eat every day, but the heavy rain spoils their hunts.
See how junior at the left was screaming during a rain break.
They are African Harrier Hawks (Polyboroidus typus), and I don't know the reason for their name change, as we have always known them as Gymnogenes.
The latter was more descriptive of their gymnastic actions while climbing trees and crawling into roofs to grab prey such as small birds and rats.
They have a special ability to do this, as they have double-jointed knees.
I have posted them several times before, as they are fascinating to watch.
.
Two shots below on another day of a Jackal Buzzard (Buteo rufofuscus).
We are in Autumn (Fall), now and we are also in a winter rainfall area between the mountains and the sea. So, our first winter rains arrived early resulting as usual in many floods in the city suburbs, and a few rural areas. No floods here though, as a contractor has been working in the river close by since last year to widen and to remove obstacles in the river. We can still hear his machines at work in the river right now as I type this.
A recent article described the harrowing situation at the Vaal Dam in the Gauteng province. The dam is full and overflowing, so 5 sluice gates had to be opened to prevent damage to the dam wall. Sadly, the houses on the riverbanks below the dam are now starting to become flooded. I remember this so well as years ago we were right there when all of the 16 sluice gates were opened. It was a nightmare, and we were caught right in the middle of the tons of water coming down.
Thankfully we survived.
I hope you enjoyed the pictures and the story.

Ah, good to see you again Lady Joan, and are you back full time again?
I also love to see the birds swirling around on the thermals.
We both have had some serious infections, and we are now investigating long Covid, as our immune systems are not up to scratch. But such is life, and we simply struggle along. Cold here in the Cape, and nothing higher than 24C.
Sad about those warnings, and KZN seems to be targeted by rain and floods lately.

I can remember the time when those 16 sluice gates were opened! I can imagine that must have been a nightmare for you being caught in the middle of that!
Oh yeah, and I was in a canoe, trying to rope a jetty that came floating down. Needless to say, that the water took me about a mile further down river until I could use the blade of the paddle as an oar to steer me to the side. Ever walked barefoot with a canoe on your head over thorny patches back to a camp? Quite an experience.

Good heavens!! As I read this I could see the whole scene in my mind and I thought to myself...this is not what you would call an adventure... Rather a nightmare, or like you call it, "an experience", but definitely not an adventure. An adventure is something you are supposed to enjoy and I can see no joy in having this kind of experience. I'm just glad you were able to find your way out, using the blade of the paddle!
And then still having to walk barefoot over thorny patches with a canoe on your head? Definitely no fun in that. And again, I'm glad you made it out and that your are able to share those memories with us today.
Ha, I wrote the adventure part tongue in cheek, as you are correct that it was a disaster. The place where we stayed on the second floor was swamped and we had to vacate in a hurry. A first for me to see their jetty, anchored by big chains gradually rising up by the water levels, and then simply being snapped off to float away. A big, uprooted tree's branches smashed the lower floor's windows and as the water started to turn the tree the branches ripped the windows and their frames right out. A terrible occasion, but by grace we were saved.
Wow! That sounds crazy! But as you say... by grace ou were saved! Amen to that!!
