Something weird and wonderful to see.
This is not an ordinary bird post, as you will see something amazing.
The first photo in the post, is of a little Cape White-eye (Zosterops virens), popping in for a drink of cold fresh water. It must have been watching us replacing the water in the bottle.
Something else was also watching.
But now whoa! What was this? A lizard looking at me and saying. Hi cobber, would you mind if I take a drink?
By the way, I am not a lizard, as I am a Cape Dwarf Gecko, and this is my specie name (Lygodactylus capensis). Lygodactylus means flexible fingers.
Of course, I agreed and said, Go right ahead Flexi, and enjoy.
And to enjoy it he did, as it was a very hot day.
Right, he was done, and these guys are really fast movers. They have to be, as if a bigger bird landed on the water bottle, he would be a goner.
He used the water bottle chain as a ladder Lol.
Just to show you how I can see the water bottle here from my study window.
It was a first for me, as I have not seen a gecko, or any other lizard for that matter, drinking water before. Now I keep a closer watch on the water bottle, but nothing yet, as it hasn't returned.
To close the post I will show you another weird twist in nature. My father-in-law took this photo in his garden, and it is of a Robin feeding her "baby".
The baby is a Cuckoo, and the lazy cuckoo mother went to lay her egg in the robin's nest. So now the robin thinks that the baby is also hers. The amazing thing evident here is that birds cannot see the differences between their own babies and the intruders. The robin will continue to feed "her" baby cuckoo until it can fly, as then it will disappear.
I have seen this before when we stayed on an apple farm and in that case, it was the lazy wives of a Pin-tailed Whydah. The females all went to lay their eggs in the nests of other birds. Other female species of birds also do this.
So there are many step-moms in nature Lol.
In fact the habit is called Brood Parasitism.
Brood parasitism is a subclass of parasitism and phenomenon and behavioural pattern of certain animals, brood parasites, that rely on others to raise their young. The strategy appears among birds, insects and fish. The brood parasite manipulates a host, either of the same or of another species, to raise its young as if it were its own, usually using egg mimicry, with eggs that resemble the host's.
So there you have it and I hope that you have enjoyed the pictures and the story.

Nice gecko. There are some lizards around here, but I've only seen a couple.
I've heard a cuckoo near here. It is amazing how they fool the other birds. Nature is strange and wonderful.
Dwarf geckos and dwarf chameleons can only be found in the Cape, and we were stunned to see them for the first time when we moved down here. Up north in the country, the lizards grow very big.
Hahaha, I find it so funny, and I have a photo somewhere of a tiny sunbird feeding a cuckoo. The female cuckoos are very entrepreneurial !LOL

It is nice to see how there are people who care about animals by installing this type of water fountain. I enjoyed the post, thank you.
It gets very hot here and it is always good to care for the wild animals and birds.
Glad that you enjoyed the post and thank you for the visit !LOL

That's funny! I've never seen a gecko or any lizard show interest in drinking water.
The Cuckoo sure has the strategy down, lay my eggs there and let that sucker robin do all the work. Very common in nature, even some lizards to the same in birds nests. The mother cuckoo is free to do whatever she wants without having to care for the baby birds!
Great pictures!

Yeah, and especially a dwarf gecko, if it was a normal big gecko, it would also be great, but the dwarf was a special gift.
Many other birds also do this and I think that the same thing would happen if human females could lay eggs !LOL
Thank you!

Wow, that is so amazing that a gecko would drink from the bottle like that. I smiled and had to share it with my husband who also thought it was amazing to see.
Thank you and yes, it was a very rare occurrence, on a very hot day. I will be watching the bottle at the next hot day, but somehow, I don't think that I will see it again.
Glad that you guys enjoyed it.

Well done, the lizard deftly climbed up to drink water. And it’s funny when the parent birds feed the “foundling” cuckoo. However, not everyone is so “kind”. Some warblers, having found someone else's egg in their nest, simply throw it away or cover the egg with building material so that it ends up at the bottom and does not hatch
Thanks, and the astounding thing is that the foster mom, cannot see the differences. If it's born in the nest, she feeds it no matter what it is.
I have not seen the warblers doing that, so I will keep a closer watch on them, to get it on camera.
Thank you for letting me know.

Well, heat tends to melt some brain cells. And this Gecko, it seems he read your thoughts and no, he definitely doesn't like being called a lizard. hahahahaha...way to laugh at the stepmom thing. It's very interesting this naturally occurring phenomenon and that you brought it here is very good, because this way we can admire the curiosities of nature. But... global warming, is a phenomenon that seems to have all the creatures of this Earth overwhelmed hahahahaha.... I loved your post.
Yep, and that's why I am becoming so forgetful lately !LOL
Be careful now, as he also doesn't like being called a gecko. He is an adult, and he is a Dwarf Gecko, as they are a special tiny breed :)
I just had to share the trickery in nature in order for people to see that there is not just trees and grass out there.
The scary thing is that animal extinction is happening right now, due to global warming, and also by the habitats by mankind. So, it is a real worry about what will still be available for the children of the future to see.
