Different backgrounds.
I want to show you how different backgrounds can enhance photos.
This is a female Navy Dropwing Dragonfly (Trithemis furva), and she was the model in all of the photos below.
We don't want to focus only on the beauty of the dragonfly, as I rather want to show you the color changes and the effect that it has on the photos. In nature, backgrounds will most always have a dramatic effect on whatever is in the foreground, and they say that the correct backgrounds can also add character to one's photos. So now if you look at the range of photos below, you will see how different the photos look. Like I said, it is all the same dragonfly, and it sat long enough to get several angles of it on camera.

As people, we are all different and we also don't see things in the same way. We also have different likes and dislikes, and to prove this I want you to tell me in the comments section below which one of these photos you like the best. There are eight photos with different backgrounds, and so you can just tell me the number of the photo that you like.
We have a river running close by, and the dragonflies often come into our garden either to rest or to catch something to eat. We also have lots of midges here and the section in the garden where my wife places the feed for the squirrels and the birds also draws the midges. Dragonflies like to catch them. So, at times they will have breakfast here, and lunch at the river :)
It's sad to think that these beautiful creatures (just like the butterflies, cicadas, and so many other little insects) live in the mature state for such short periods. They can spend weeks or months, or in the dragonflies' case even years, to reach the mature state and then they only live for a couple months or weeks. Their main purpose is to mate and to lay eggs before they die.
Such is insect life.

That's a beautiful dragonfly! We have many species that live around here in Southern California, but since there isn't a water source near my home they don't visit all that often. There are some beautiful blue ones I see from time to time, one of these days I'll have to try my luck catching them in photograph. I've never tried imaging insects before!
As far as the pictures go I have to say my favorite is the second image as it draws out so much of the color in the dragonfly. My second favorite is the sixth as it allows you to see the details in the wings so vividly. Very interesting experiment showing how the background really changes how the subject appears!
Well, I hope that you will get those blues on camera, and when I started with photography, my first year was spent on getting insects on camera. Mostly dragonflies. A professional nature photographer gave me the advice, as he said that if I could get the small things on camera, then the bigger things will be so much easier for me to get on camera. Just some tips, dragonflies are very fast and so move about very slow. Don't try to get too close, as they have all round vision. And of course, good luck :)
You also have it correct, as the main concern is to get the background to enhance the detail of the main subject. That is what I tried to show in this post, and I am glad that you found it interesting.
