Wow, I find it incredible that you've been studying a language for so many years without taking classes. It takes almost infinite patience to persevere. What's more, Japanese has the added difficulty of using a different and multiplied alphabet, so in reality each new word is several... Most people who practise other languages do so with books or films. The closest thing to a video game that I can think of is Duolingo. 😂 I tried using it to improve my English, but I'm terrible at keeping up with it and I get bored with the repetitions. I encourage you to keep going with this great goal, you've already reached an important milestone. And as you say, once you progress a little further, the pace will be faster. Go for it!

It’s interest fueled by if interest fuels you you can do anything so I put the effort on keeping that interest and channeling it into effective study rather than forcing myself to sit down and do it. I’m excited to progress in the story and to “collect” 10,000 words. The real game is defeating 10,000 words, the game-games just make it more fun.

Japanese is unique in that there’s so many games (and anime) that were made in Japanese, and some of the stories could easily compete with Star Wars or Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter. When I studied Chinese I didn’t have any media I was interested in, only some folk rock and people, but you can practice Chinese anywhere in the world haha

Duolingo is great if you just use it as a daily quiz to find your weak point. As primary study it’s kind of weak.

I guess the best thing to do is find the thing in English that interests you most and hype yourself up about it

Absolutely agree! Motivation is the key. I've learned more English in the time I've been here at Hive. Although I continue to use the translator, I strive to read and write in English as much as I can. My pending subject is the listening and speaking part. 🫣
