This imposing building belongs to the Palace of Justice of the Argentine Nation, and when I captured these images, I told myself that I would use them in some reflection and I believe today is the right moment. Today’s reflection is tied to something that happened to me yesterday: I saw a man at the Ezeiza train station sleeping among cardboard boxes. Zuni told me, “I see him every day,” and it seems that much of society has normalized this. Justice! Justice?

[Spanish] Este imponente edificio pertenece al palacio de justicia de la nación Argentina y cuando capturé las imágenes, me dije a mí mismo, en alguna reflexión la utilizaré y creo que hoy es la indicada. La reflexión de hoy viene acompañado con algo que me aconteció el día de ayer y tiene que ver con ver a un señor en la estación de trenes de Ezeiza, durmiendo entre cartones. Zuni me dice, yo lo veo todos los días y pareciera que gran parte de la sociedad normaliza eso. ¡Justicia! ¿Justicia?

      You stand in front of those buildings, with their enormous columns and windows from another era, and you feel like you’re facing something solid incorruptible, as they say almost sacred. It’s the place where the scales should always be balanced, and truth should weigh more than any wallet. Of course, it doesn’t always happen that way. Between that marble-filled building beautiful as it may be and the case files, there are vast gaps to navigate.

! [Spanish] Uno se para frente a esos edificios, con enormes columnas y esos ventanales de otra época, y siente que está frente a algo sólido, incorruptible como quien dice, casi sagrado. Es ese lugar donde la balanza debería estar siempre equilibrada y la verdad debería pesar más que cualquier billetera. Por supuesto, no siempre sucede. Entre ese edificio lleno de mármol, que por cierto son muy bonito, y los expedientes, existen grandes lagunas para recorrer.

      Sometimes I feel that something similar happens in Web3. We have our façades, where we talk about decentralization, community, fairness, and many beautiful ideals that fit perfectly in any white paper or welcome post. But how often does the reality look more like neighborhood politics than the utopia we all imagined? Big accounts tipping the scales, rewards that don’t always go to the ones who worked the hardest, and decisions made far from everyone’s sight.

! [Spanish] En ocasiones siento que en la web 3 pasa algo parecido. Tenemos nuestras fachadas, donde hablamos de descentralización, comunidad, equidad y muchos ideales bonitos que encajan perfecto en cualquier libro blanco o en una publicación de bienvenida. Pero cuántas veces la realidad se parece más a la política de un barrio que a la utopía que imaginamos todos. Grandes cuentas que inclinan la balanza, recompensas que no siempre llegan al que más se esforzó y decisiones que se toman lejos de la vista de todos.

      Even so, I think we’re on the right track. If this happens in a world of freedom, where I someone who is not an expert on the subject can express myself and share my point of view, I believe that’s a sign we’re heading in the right direction. Of course, change brings with it old habits, or Web2 customs, where centralization rules and if you don’t fit the platform’s philosophy, you get censored. That’s why I think that, even though here things can be quite cumbersome at times, the horizon still promises the freedom, fairness, and decentralization we long for.

! [Spanish] De igual modo, pienso que vamos por el camino correcto. Si esto sucede en un mundo de libertad, donde yo, que no soy un experto en el tema, puedo expresarme y contar mi parecer, creo que esto denota que vamos por buen camino. Por supuesto, los cambios, acarrean viejas costumbres o costumbre de la web 2, donde la centralización manda y si no encajas con la filosofía de la plataforma, te censuran. Es por eso que pienso, que pese a que aquí por momentos sea todo bastante engorroso, creo que el norte promete la libertad, equidad y descentralización que deseamos.

      Many times we think that each person is responsible for their own results, and I believe that sometimes one makes all the effort, but the political and economic conditions—things beyond our control—are not always ideal. I don’t know if the man who sleeps every night among cardboard boxes did everything wrong and these are the results. Honestly, I don’t know. But I dare to think that there should be policies to help those people who give their all and, for some reason, still don’t achieve the results.

[Spanish] Muchas veces pensamos que cada uno es responsable de sus resultados, y pienso que en ocasiones uno hace todo el esfuerzo, pero las condiciones políticas, económicas, que no dependen de uno, en ocasiones no son las ideales. No sé si el señor que duerme todas las noches entre los cartones, realizó todo mal y esos son los resultados. Sinceramente, no lo sé, pero me animo a pensar que deben existir políticas para ayudar a esas personas que entregan todo y que por alguna razón no logran los resultados.

      And, on the other hand, just around the corner from my house, the mayor of the municipality was inaugurating a park. Now, which is more important? You might say both, and to some extent, I agree. Personally, I think that building a park is something all public officials should do, and it shouldn’t be a reason for applause or crowds gathering for an inauguration. They’re simply fulfilling their duty. Now, taking that man out of homelessness and bringing him to a shelter—to give him warmth, love, assistance, and food—I believe that is what truly matters.

! [Spanish] Y, por otro lado, a la vuelta de mi casa, estaba el intendente del municipio inaugurando una plaza. Ahora, qué es más importante. Me dirás, las dos cosas y en cierto punto coincido. Particularmente pienso que la plaza, es algo que tienen que hacer todos los funcionarios y no deben ser motivos para aplausos y reuniones de multitudes para inaugurarlo. Están cumpliendo con su deber. Ahora, sacar a ese hombre de la indigencia y llevarlo a un hogar, para brindarle cobijo, amor, asistencia y comida, creo que es lo conducente.

      I believe that if we want the scales to be balanced, it’s not enough to simply look at the courthouse — we need to roll up our sleeves, act with our hearts, and above all, let common sense prevail.

! [Spanish] Creo que si queremos que la balanza esté equilibrada, no alcanza con mirar el edificio de justicia, sino ponernos manos a la obra, con el corazón y por sobre todas las cosas, que prevalezca el sentido común.

      I believe that true justice lies in the small decisions we make every day decisions made with empathy for others, and in pursuit of a united, fair, decentralized community with a future.

! [Spanish] Pienso que la verdadera justicia, están las pequeñas decisiones que tomamos todos los días. Esas decisiones que lo hacemos empatizando con el prójimo y en pos de una comunidad unida, equitativa, descentralizada y con futuro.
