Trying to prove myself
Hello, beautiful people! Welcome to my blog. It's a pleasure to have you in this space. Once again, welcome.🤗
I think at some point in our lives we have all felt the pressure to fit in or be accepted by our loved ones or others. The desire to be accepted or noticed can make us sometimes go out of our way to do things that will make us seem cool, praised, or likeable. This experience is usually common during our adolescence stage and can persist into adulthood.
The one person who has made me go out of my way over and over again to get his praises, acceptance, or seem cool is my dad.
I grew up in a home where you need to be on good terms with my dad or please him in order for you to get some favors from him.
I had a cousin that came to live with us, and my dad was always praising her, most especially when it comes to cooking. He felt since she grew up in the village before coming to stay with us, she knew how to cook better than my siblings and I.
My dad is a selective eater; he doesn't eat a lot of stuff, and if the food is not pleasing to his eyes, no matter how delicious that food maybe, he wouldn't eat it. Because of how he is, anything that has to do with my dad's food, I left it for my mom and a few times for my cousin.
So there was this festive period, I was in SS 3 at the time. The work was too much; everyone was already getting tired of cooking, and we had not done pepper soup. It was towards evening, then my mom said we should leave the pepper soup till the following day.
But I told her I would prepare it. I felt this was an opportunity to prove to my dad that I can cook; even though I was tired, I took my time in preparing it and made sure it came out well.
My dad and uncles were all seated in the parlor when I served them theirs. A few minutes later they called me up, and this pepper soup was delicious. Before my mom could even say anything, I screamed from the kitchen that I was the one that prepared it. While running to the parlor, at first they didn't believe me, especially my dad, until my mom had to affirm that I made it.
A few days later, I made stew. When I heard him commending the stew, I again rushed out to tell him that I was the one that made it. From that day on, my dad never doubted my cooking skills, even though he still says his wife's cooking is the best.
It felt cool knowing that my dad could allow me to cook sometimes for him.
There is nothing as wonderful as being accepted and validated, and the feeling hits differently when it's coming from your loved ones. It can be such a morale boost to know that those dear to you believe in you and are in full support of you.
