Prioritizing Love Over Comfort

It is natural to envision a reality free of obstacles, a life where we can have everything we desire without compromise. But one uncontestable truth about life is that it is unpredictable. It rarely unfolds exactly the way we plan, and sometimes, in order to achieve certain goals or to meet the needs of others, we must many times make sacrifices and delay our personal gratification.

This has been the story of my life, time and time again. I have found myself in situations where I have had to set aside my personal comfort or desires to focus on something of greater significance. As a parent, this is almost my second nature now.

There are countless occasions where I needed something for myself, but on countless occasions, I have had to shelve my needs and put my children’s needs first. For example, I have had days where I planned to take some time out for myself—maybe go for a walk or get a little rest or relaxation—only for my kids to come up with something entirely different that required my immediate and urgent attention. And just like that, I would find myself putting aside my plans and stepping into their world instead, to meet theirs.

Financially, the story is no different. Over the years, I have made plans for things I wanted to buy or experiences I wanted to have, in a bid to enjoy and reward myself. I would set a budget, save up money for it, and get excited about finally doing something for myself, only for life to throw a curveball.

I have found myself repeatedly giving up my personal comfort, desires, and plans just to take care of the ones I love.

As much as it can feel exhausting at times, I have come to terms with the reality that this is the essence of love and responsibility. Sacrifice does not always come naturally; many times the cost of sacrifice makes the beneficiary of that sacrifice all the more worth all the efforts put into it, but it is often necessary.

When you care deeply and passionately for others, their happiness and well-being can feel more important than your very own. It is not that my needs do not matter; they absolutely do, but I have learned that life sometimes asks us to prioritize differently.

Oh dear Ozd, this is the story of most parents, when the kids are here, we sacrifice our comfort and resources without thinking twice for their sakes, they simply become our top priority. May we all enjoy the fruit of our labor. ❣️❣️❣️❣️
