Beyond The Curse

Mrs. Agatha sat quietly on her balcony; her eyes were drifting toward the beautiful beach and all the excited and beautiful people running and playing around, while the evening sun was casting its warm glow over where she was seated. However, her mind was consumed by the weight of her thoughts.

She couldn't help shake off the feeling of disappointment and pain that had been building up inside her for some time now. It felt like her chest was going to explode. She couldn't help but cast her mind back to the day her precious bundle of joy, Damien was born. She couldn't contain the joy and hope that filled her heart. When the nurse passed him to her, the moment she held him in her arms for the first time, she knew her whole world would revolve around him, and tears of joy couldn't stop flowing from her cheeks.

She literally chooses the name Damien for him, which means "to subdue" or "to conquer." She wanted him to be different from the men from his father's clan, so she chose the perfect name for him, a name that would depict his future, who he would turn out to be. Someone different from his father's clan.

From the first day she found out she was pregnant with her son, she immediately envisioned how bright and beautiful his future would be; she knew deep down in her heart that it would be one that was far from the struggles and hardships of her husband's clan. This was why she had made one of the most difficult decisions in her life: to leave their home country, the only place they know as home, to live and give birth to him in a different country.

All the memories of how she nurtured her beloved son Damien—she remembered all the sleepless nights she had to nurture her dearest son and the countless sacrifices she had made for Damien's sake. How she had worked tirelessly without any rest or looking after herself to provide him with the best education, the best opportunities, and the best life possible. She did everything in her power to give him the best chance to succeed and connect with well-meaning people just to make a better life for himself.

But now, as she looked at Damien's condition, she couldn't help but wonder where she had gone wrong. She questions herself, her capabilities, and how she brought him up. Had she been too controlling? Had she pushed him too hard to the point he couldn't take it? The weight of the fears she was feeling was too heavy on her heart, questioning whether all her efforts had been in vain.

Mrs. Agatha was so lost in the thought concerning the mysterious circumstances surrounding the deaths of her other children, all of whom had passed away at the age of eleven. She had been told about a supposed curse that has been haunting her husband's family for generations. It's either the male kids die early or those that manage to reach adulthood become useless no matter the level of their education.

She took a deep breath and snapped back to the present. She whispered to herself, "I have come too far to allow any ancestral curse to make all my efforts become futile on my son." I would definitely do whatever it will take to help Damien get back on track, to ensure that he has the bright future I have always envisioned for him.

With her newfound determination, Mrs. Agatha stood up from her chair and walked towards Damien's room, sat down by his scattered bedside, placed her hand on his feet, and spoke to him and explained the supposed curse of his father's family.

Damien darling, I know everyone in your father's family believed it's in their nature to be useless, to fail, and not amount to anything because of the curse; the men from that clan don't do anything meaningful with their lives. That's the reason why your dad is the way he is, but I want you, my son, to know you are different.

I want you to live up to your name and conquer and subdue the curse. I don't want you to allow the curse to take over your being. Fight it, and you can start by first leaving this room and living your life to the fullest. You are far bigger and greater than you can ever imagine.

Damien, as his father's son, is destined to do great things. I want to believe that he is the chosen one and that the supposed curse will not render him useless, but quite the opposite. Perhaps he can be a leader who brings about great change in his lineage.

I love that Agatha did not give up on her son and her resolve not to allow her son waste away, like men of his father's family.
