My Rice farm (Oriza sativa)

It's a holiday (vacation) away form class and it's time to check out farm so I needed to visits farm to see what i have planted. I went to my rice farm and thank God for the progress. My name is Ovey Charles, I am a young man who engage in farming of different crops to support my self and family by making food available. One of such crop is Rice.

Rice (Oriza sativa) is classify as an annual crop that can grow to about 1.5 to 2 meters height depending on varieties . It is one of the major agricultural activities in Nigeria, country that is so blessed with rich soil and good climate for farming activities. Many farmers in Nigerian cultivate rice me inclusive and it's a major source of livelihood for many in the country. Just as other food crops rice farming provide food security and generate income for the famer and nation at large.

Rice are cultivated both on commercial and subsistence level. For commercial famers it's for profit making which also makes it available for millions of Nigerians in the markets while for subsistence farmers like us it's just for the family consumption . There are two major varieties of rice commonly grown in Nigeria; the upland and lowland (swamp) rice. Lowland rice also known as swamp rice is grown in an area that is flooded with water , while upland rice is grown in non-flooded areas. Both of them have different soil and water requirements

There are many practices involves in rice farming ranging from planting to processing.

Planting: Rice can be planted either by sowing or broadcasting. Sowing method though tedious most peasant famers prefer the method because it's help in reducing been eaten up by pest such as birds.

This also due to the small land space though few also practice the broadcasting method.

Germination: Rice germinated 3-4 days after planting for direct seed planting.

Weed control: weeds can be control by application of herbicides. This can be done before emergence of the seedlings to prevents the weeds from germinating. After emergence, weed still found in the farm can be control by applying a selective herbicides. Selective herbicides are chemical that only have effect on certain weeds thereby leaving your rice plants unharmed. Weeds control can also be done manually by hand removal or with the help of a hoe.

Fertilizer application. This is done by broadcasting for crystals form . Liquid fertilizer can also be apply by spraying using Knapsack sprayer.

Maturity. Normally it take 3- 6 months for rice to mature from panting depending on the maturity.

Harvesting. Rice is harvested manually using sickle or mechanically using a combine harvester.

It is harvested when most of the grain turned yellow. It is advisable to thresh your rice immediately after harvest to avoid lose by pest and theft though it's more easier to thresh when allow to dry.
