The Press; Voice To The Voiceless

The whole society experiences progress when the right government is in power, it is safe to live in such places because growth and development is sure, as long as the society, right from the leaders to the followers are law abiding.

A proof that a society is living in peace and harmony is “Freedom of Speech”. Wherever the government tremble upon the rights of citizens to talk out their minds regarding the happenings in the country, that country is under attack. Freedom of Speech is a means to voice out whatever that is conceived in the minds of citizens. This exercise is able to highlight some minor problems the government aren't aware of.

Sometimes back in my country Nigeria, the rights for freedom of speech were almost taken away by some selfish individuals in the government who felt the citizens were criticizing them too much for their misconduct and evil practices.
The press and social media has always been a voice to the voiceless and has helped solve a lot of problems in the country. Freedom of Speech should remain an entitlement for the citizens so that everyone will be able to contribute his or her own quota in the country.

Although there is abuse of rights, I think there is a better way to handle such cases than taking away the freedom of citizens to voice out their opinion about the country's affairs. A lot of times I have seen how “Freedom of Speech” leads to the betterment of society. The truth is that there are places that the government thinks everything is moving well since they can not be everywhere at the same time, it is the duty of the Press and the citizens to create awareness about what is going on in their vicinity so that the government can take proper action.

One of the major roads in my locality collapsed recently and there has been serious go-slow with both area activities and other official activities. The menace lasted for sometime before the government took actions over it. The problem would have lasted much longer because nobody was doing anything about it. The problem was escalating because there were accidents as a result of the bad road. It was after the press came and took live videos and pictures of what was going on in that place that the government took action. The press will continue to remain an important means of communication from the minority to the leaders and to everyone around the world.

“Freedom of Speech” and the press are working hand in hand because the press stands as an amplifier of the people's voices..
