Odeleite - Castro Marim / Algarve / Riding Portugal

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)

MOUNTAIN VILLAGE.jpg

Most of the time we talk about vacation we always think about rest! Do nothing for hours on end, and enjoy what you like most (countryside, beach, culture).
Here at home, vacations are always synonymous with roadtrips as long as we’re together.
We had to slow down when the youngest was born but then we started again :-)

PT

We took advantage of these days down here to go to the Algarve so that she and my husband could visit the place where I spent some of my childhood vacations.
I will show you this place another day.
On the journey back to our accommodation, we came across a village that caught our attention and made us divert from our original route: Odeleite.

PT

Located in the heart of the Algarve mountains, this peaceful village seemed like a small refuge between hills and valleys, offering a glimpse of a quieter and more authentic part of the Algarve, away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist-filled areas.

PT

What caught our attention were the curious metal statues that decorate the entrance to the village. These sculptures were a representation of scenes from rural life and traditional figures from the region. They seemed to portray the daily lives of those who lived and worked in this arid but lively land. Each piece was positioned, integrating perfectly into the landscape. It was impossible not to stop and appreciate the creativity and artistic sense that those statues brought to the environment.

But before entering Odeleite, we were surprised by the natural beauty of the Dam. The turquoise water, contrasting with the green of the surrounding slopes, created a spectacular setting. This, also known as "The Blue Dragon" for its sinuous shape that resembles the body of a dragon, is one of the biggest attractions in the region. This name was given after an aerial image was captured by a tourist in 2015. It was a shame we didn't have a drone, as it would have been a spectacular short film given the time and location.
The view of the dam from the top is breathtaking.

Odeleite, in addition to its natural beauty, proved to be a genuine village, with whitewashed houses and narrow, calm streets. The rhythm of life here seems to follow the rhythm of nature, slow and harmonious as in almost all the villages here. The simplicity of the place, combined with the imposing dam, creates a perfect environment for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle and find a corner of serenity.
As the inscription on a small bench at the entrance to the village says:
It was an unexpected discovery that left us with the feeling that, once again, there is still much to be discovered in our beautiful country.

PT

I hope you enjoyed.
See you around.
Wishing you much peace and health

Those who pass by us do not go alone. They leave a bit of themselves, taking a piece of us."

It feels like a beautiful place and too quiet. The important thing is how it respects nature. Odeleite conveys an incredible and unparalleled calm.

Something I have noticed from Portugal or at least from your posts that the places you visit is the tranquility that you can appreciate in them, I was so struck by the shape that it has and if it certainly has the shape of a dragon.

Hello @carmenlealf! We tend to look for quiet places. We don't enjoy being among the croud. Algarve has lots of places full of tourists but we run from them :-)
Thank you for stopping by😉

Odeleite, in addition to its natural beauty, proved to be a genuine village, with whitewashed houses and narrow, calm streets.

Exactly, that's what was going through my mind while reading and watching the pictures. Also, the blue sky with these whitewashed houses, looking so amazing.
