A Sweet Surprise Birthday Lunch with Old Colleagues

Yesterday, I met my old co-workers for a small celebration lunch, and it turned into one of those days that feels warm and lucky from start to finish. One of our friends was having a birthday, and the group planned a meal together. I said yes immediately, because I always miss that office friendship energy—the kind where you can laugh in one second and talk seriously in the next.

The best part is this: the birthday friend did not know I was coming. I was a surprise guest. When I arrived, everyone acted normal for a moment, and then I walked in and said hello. The birthday friend’s face changed in a second—first confusion, then surprise, then a big smile. It felt like I was the “birthday gift.” That made me laugh, and honestly, it made me happy too.

In our friend group, we don’t really buy birthday gifts anymore. Instead, we do something very simple and practical: whoever has the birthday gets treated to lunch and cake. We pay for the food, enjoy the time, and create a memory. I think it makes more sense than buying random things. A nice meal is useful, and the moment stays in your mind longer than a gift bag.

The 13:13 Coincidence

There was also a funny coincidence that made the day feel even more special. The date was February 13, and at one point, I looked at my phone and saw the time: 13:13. Yes—13th day, and 13:13 on the clock. It sounds small, but it felt like a little sign saying, “Today is a fun day. Pay attention.” We joked about it for a while and took it as a cute, lucky moment.

After that, we focused on the most important thing: food. The restaurant was calm and comfortable, and the table looked so nice. Everyone was hungry, because we came with a real plan—to eat well and talk a lot.

I ordered an olive pasta. It was simple, creamy, and full of flavor. The olives gave it a salty taste that I love, and the pasta was cooked perfectly. And another friend ordered fried chicken pieces with fries and sauces. The chicken was golden and crispy, and the fries looked hot and perfect for sharing (even if everyone said, “I will not share,” like a joke).
