The Darkest Obsession
He pulled me flush against him, and I looked away, so he doesn't see the red blush that had managed to creep up my neck and cheeks. I inhaled, breathing in his scent, taking in the entire space around us again. I wanted to lean more into him, he felt too comfortable, too soft, irrespective of his rock hard exterior that was more than just his looks. He placed a finger on my chin and turned me to him. He's saying something but I wasn't listening to him. I was lost in the deepest cobalt shade of blue I've ever seen. His eyes looked fiercer, steamier, like he was trying to put a restraint on himself.
"Are you listening?" I heard him say, shaking me out of my thoughts. My eyebrows are raised and I looked at him dumbfounded. He had been talking for the past thirty seconds and I couldn't make a single word of what he said. His chiseled jawline and beautiful eyes were all too distracting and alluring.
"Jude," He said firmly, tightening his hand around my waist. He paused a bit and his eyeballs went sideways to look around. "You need to leave."
That slapped me away from whatever thought I was trying to process. I cocked an arched eyebrow behind my mask and dug my hand into his arm around me. "I'm not going anywhere till I get what I want."
Cassien's face turned into a deep frown, and he clenched his jaw harder. "People are watching." He said, grinding his teeth. "They'll eventually want to know who you are."
"Oh yeah?" I snorted. "They wouldn't be watching if you weren't with me."
His lips twitched, like he was trying to hold a snarl or smirk. He unwrapped his arm around me but kept his hand on my chin and my face towards him. "You think they know who I am with my mask on?" His voice was deep and husky. We're so close, I could feel his minted breathing on my skin. The entirety of my space had been taken up by him. Nothing but his cologne filled my nostrils, his voice was drowning away the music and his eyes. Those beautiful cobalt eyes were the only thing I saw.
I spotted him minutes away, who wouldn't know who he was? He had this massive aura encircling him. He looked dangerous without even knowing and he was gorgeous. The man who took the entire Black Rose all by himself, the maestro, Cassien.
"Yeah?" He answered. I didn't realize I'd said his name out loud. He was everywhere, and even in my head. I wrapped my hand gently around his wrist and took it away from my chin. I had to get away from him. Thinking about it now, I didn't really think this through before coming to the ball. What was I looking for? How do I get information? What do I do? I hadn't thought this through at all. Ava was right, I liked to jump head in danger without thinking and this was an exact scenerio.
"Laurent." I breathed. "Do you know anything about that name?" I looked up at Cassien, his eyes staring into mine. Who else to get better information from than the head of the Black Rose himself? I set my lips into a firm line and waited for an answer. At the same time, trying to steady my racing heart. This was it. He was going to tell me what he knows, and I was going to walk out of here and away.
Cassien raked a hand through his hair and sighed. Always the same hand, always through his hair. "I know that's your family name. Am I supposed to know something more or different?"
I don't want to die so I turned away from him and walked the opposite direction. His eyes told me enough that he wasn't lying but what was I supposed to believe? I'd spent years planning to get close enough to the black rose to get answers and now, I finally ask the one person in control of everything and he has no idea. Just great. The universe loved to screw me over, multiple times without rest.
I ran a hand through my dress and grasped my purse tighter as I walked out of the ballroom for some fresh air. It was beginning to get stuffy and I'd bumped into the man I danced with earlier. He'd asked for a conversation but I'd declined politely and told him I needed to use the ladies room.
The convenience was quiet, with bright white circular lights stuck on the ceiling. It had a huge mirror that ran from the distance of the beginning of the row of toilets to the end. It was massive. I placed my purse on the sink and looked at myself in the mirror. I looked the same as I was when I last saw my reflection in my car. The only thing different was the pink blush that was now fading away from my neck. Cassien looked different tonight too. He looked more powerful than he did in his usual button up shirt and pants. "He's wearing the same thing but with a tux." A voice screamed in my head. I placed my pinky finger on my lips and cleaned a smudge at a corner.
I dusted the lower part of my dress with my palm and walked out of the bathroom. Cassien had no idea who they were, doesn't mean someone else in the entire syndicate won't have what I'm looking for. I raised my chin as I stepped into the ballroom again, the sound of music filling the entire space. The people in the ballroom had added by a percent, I couldn't tell if that was a good thing or not. A waiter walked towards me and offered a glass of wine to me. I nodded curtly at him and took the glass from the tray but something silver and shiny in his pocket caught my eyes. A thousand possibilities flew into my head. It looked like a knife but it could be a gun. Why would a waiter have a gun?
I moved towards a large table and dropped the glass of wine on it. I scanned the ballroom for the waiter again but ended up seeing multiple people that were in the same waiter outfits. I didn't get a look at his face so I had no idea what he looked like. Shit, he needs to know about this. It was no coincidence a waiter had a fucking gun with him. I pushed away from the table to look for Cassien when a gunshot cracked through the ballroom.
