Lookism — If looks could change your life
I have been reading this manhwa for a while now, and for some reasons it’s not resonating with me. It’s great, lovely even but…maybe I am just the one who’s kind of slow. But that shouldn’t be the case considering I binge read three hundred plus episodes of eleceed. And speaking of Eleceed, I am yet to write a review about that manhwa, for some reasons I have been delaying that too. Oh well, happy new month everyone. Happy Halloween in arias also. I wanted to review a horror anime in celebration of it, but I kinda fell asleep mid write and didn’t just bother when I woke up the next day cause I was pissed I fell asleep.

This particular manhwa is titled Lookism. If you’re into Korean mangas you must have heard it, it’s pretty popular with almost a billion reads on webtoon and other comics apps worldwide. It revolves around Daniel Park. Daniel park is considered fat, short and ugly and is being bullied and treated like the lowest of the lowest. He is also poor which makes everything so much worst for him. He struggles with the physical and emotional pain that comes from being bullied. The trauma builds within him and one certain day he transfers his aggression to his mother. Yelling at her he wants to change school and she couldn’t provide for him some basic necessities. Because like I said, he is being trained by only his mother, his father being deceased. Through his mother’s effort, they are barely passing by but atleast they pass. Daniel is sad, he is frustrated, miserable and angry and upon everything, he is bad at school work too. Technically, he doesn’t even try to excel in his studies cause of what he’s going through so I won’t really call him dumb.

Daniel Park, finally, changes school and leaves town to a different one. In this new school, he’ll start again but an incident occurred just his first day. He is being beaten to a pulp and he goes home, once again sad and realizes it doesn’t matter where he goes, or what he does, no one acknowledges or respects who is ugly. And he considers, most considered him ugly and fat. Daniel Park falls asleep and wakes up in a new body. He turns sideways and sees his other body just beside him, asleep. He’s in shock and surprised. Where did this body come from? Who owns it? Why am I in it? He has no idea where it came from, it just appeared all of a sudden. This new body is taller, so handsome, muscular and fit. It is everything his former body isn’t. He decides to fall asleep. Maybe it’s just a dream and he’ll wake up in his other body. It felt weird seeing himself asleep from another view. So he was convinced he was sleeping.

Daniel Park goes to sleep and wakes up in his old body. He sighs. He knew it was a dream. And then the most shocking thing happened. The new body he’d woken up in was just beside him, asleep. He doesn’t know what’s going on, so he falls asleep again and he wakes up in the new body. He discovers that he has two bodies and goes on a quest to find out how they both work and can be interchange.
He decides to use his new body for school and oh man, he was the talk of the school. Woth his good looks, height and fit figure, most of the girls were fawning over him. He even had the guys attention and no one laughed when he walked by like how it was in his previous body. No one aimed to show their strength on his body. They liked him and wanted to get to know him. It felt like a dream come true.

Lookism is all about the pros and cons of good looks. The manhwa states that if you’re pretty and good looking, things fall in place for you. People treat good looking people better. And although, some of the quoting was a bit intense, it was nothing short of the truth. It also talks about bullying, discrimination, class and power dynamics, identity and self worth. I am almost at two hundred chapters and it’s a new month, so I will decide to get into it again, as I’ve been so busy the previous month.
Lookism is by Park Tae-Jun, it is currently on webtoon, mangazone and I think other websites and apps. It should be cause it’s pretty popular.
And also, it is hive power up day today. Power up day happens on the first of every month, and we as a community are on the hunt to have one of the largest amount of people power up today. By the way, the manhwa is better than the Netflix show by 1000%.

I personally liked the way you described the struggles and change of Daniel. Lookism indeed reveals the cruelty of society in regard to looks. Your review made me remember why I preferred the manhwa to the show as well. I loved the honesty and the humanness of what you had written concerning his feelings.
Oh, thankyou so much.
I aimed to show it and im glad you read it like that. Although I cringed a bit at the way the author drew overweight people, it was peak.
And it gets so much better as you go, but I still prefer Eleceed. And I will review that soon.
