The Unpleasant Experience of Women with PCOS.

There are things that surprise me a lot, but with every doubt I have, I quickly go to the books to read about these occurrences. There is a pretty famous actress in my country who recently shared her experience with PCOS, this got me astonished because she was still looking plum, radiant, and beautiful at the time.

I was wondering how someone who was losing blood consistently for months would still appear this healthy, the thoughts alone for some people would even make them lose weight, but here she was, not even looking like she had a problem.

PCOS (Polycystic ovary syndrome) is a hormonal issue that could spring up for a lady during her reproductive years. A woman with PCOS may stop seeing her menstrual flow often, or have a lengthy time of periodic flow. It also comes with excessive hair growth, infertility, and acne. This condition is instigated by having an excessive hormone called ANDROGEN in the body.

What actually happens is that there is a case of hormonal imbalance in the body that occurs when the ovaries create hormones excessively. With the occurrence of PCOS, the ovaries produce unusually high levels of hormones known as ANDROGENS, this will cause the reproductive hormone to get imbalanced, and as a result produce an outcome of irregular menstrual cycle, missed period, and unpredictable ovulation.

During an ultrasound scan, small follicle cysts may be visible on the ovaries and this is a result of the absence of ovulation. It is not compulsory for cysts to be present in your ovaries before there is a case of PCOS, the ovarian cysts in themselves are neither painful nor dangerous.

The major cause of PCOS remains unknown, but there are evidences to show that genetics play a very strong role to this effect. Several other factors play a very significant role in the cause of PCOS; Insulin resistance, obesity, and low-grade inflammation.
PCOS happens to be a very common cause of infertility in women, it also increases the risk of other health conditions. There are common symptoms of PCOS, and a diagnosis of PCOS is made when there is at least two of these symptoms;

  • Polycystic Ovaries: The ovary may be bigger, several follicles that contain immature eggs could develop around the edge of the ovary. This means the ovaries may not function as normal as they should.

  • Excessive Hair Growth: High level of the hormone androgen in the body, may lead to hirsutism, which is excessive body and facial hair. In some cases, there could also be a case of male-pattern baldness.

  • Irregular periods: Missing periods or completely not having a period, but there could also be heavy bleeding occurring during periods.

  • Skin Darkening: Patches of dark skin especially around the folds of the neck, groin, armpits, and underneath the breast.

  • Acne: PCOS could cause acne, especially at the back, chest and face region. This acne could continue even past teenage age and may be very difficult to treat.

  • Obesity: A large percentage of people who have PCOS may begin to have trouble with weight maintenance. (Maybe, this is the reason why she was adding so much weight at the time).

  • Infertility: PCOS is the most common cause of infertility, remember that not ovulating constantly will result in an inability to conceive.

Although some women can successfully carry a pregnancy even with the presence of PCOS, but there are risks associated with PCOS and pregnancy, we have the likes of preterm birth, preeclampsia, high blood pressure, gestational diabetes and preterm birth.

The treatment of PCOS are dependent on either you desire to get pregnant or not. Medical expert will make treatment plans available based on these choices. With a plan to get pregnant, treatments including; hormonal birth control, lifestyle changes, medicine that in insulin-sensitizing, medications to block androgens are used for treatment.

On the other hand, for a woman who deires pregnancy; the treatments for PCOS will include surgery, drugs that will help induce ovulation, and in a case where medication doesn't seem to prove effective, IVF is also used. Many women who have PCOS find that their menstural cycle begins to get more regular as they approach menopause. However, PCOS hormonal imbalance does not change with change, so the symptoms of PCOS continues.

What PCOS affects in a patient can be very troubling ranging from hormonal imbalances, irregular periods, fertility issues, unwanted changes in appearance, excessive hair growth or acne, weight gain and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. Seeking urgent medical attention when there are slight changes in the body is very important, although it can be very troubling that the exact cause of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is not fully understood yet.
