Procrastination is truly a thief of time
Here is a confession, I have to make on this week prompt: I have really struggled with procrastination for as long as I can remember.
It has not been an easy thing, the issue really lingered for long.
It's a constant battle to stay focused, motivated, and productive. But over the years, I've developed some strategies that have helped me overcome procrastination and achieve my goals.

In this post, I'll share my personal story of struggling with procrastination, and the 8 rules that have helped me overcome it.

Here is My Story

I've always been a bit of a perfectionist. I want everything to be just right, and I often get caught up in making sure every detail is perfect. But this perfectionism can also be a major obstacle. It's easy to get overwhelmed by the pressure to be perfect, and before I know it, I'm putting off tasks until the last minute.

But I've learned that procrastination is not just about being lazy or lacking motivation. It's often a sign of deeper issues, such as fear of failure, perfectionism, or lack of clear goals.
Most of the time I would write out my weekly plans, I would even timebox it, but then I keep shifting the time forward until little to nothing is achieved at the end of the time.
But then after some understanding of how goals and plans work I got better ways of overcoming my long time procrastinating habits.
So I read some books, most important of all of them is goals by Brian Tracy
That book really shaped my thinking pattern and gave me a new mindset on the issues, after carefully adhering to some principles and strategies, I no longer was a slave to procrastination.

My 8 Rules That Helped Me Overcome Procrastination

So, how did I overcome procrastination? Here are the 8 rules that helped me:

  • Break Down Big Tasks into Smaller Ones: Procrastination often occurs when a task seems too overwhelming.
Whenever you have something to do and it looks too complex and difficult to do, you tend to procrastinate, To avoid this, I break down big tasks into smaller, manageable ones.
For example for a goal of learning piano, I will start practicing the simple practical aspects (the chords) of the piano, everyday for 30 minutes, this will help me to stay focused and get a quick consistent result.

  • Set Clear Goals and Deadlines: Clear goals and deadlines help me stay focused and motivated. I write down what I want to achieve and when I want to achieve it. Make sure your goal has a start time and stop time. Set an expiry or deadline date.

  • Create a Schedule and Stick to It: I plan out my day, week, or month, and stick to my schedule. I set aside dedicated time for tasks and avoid multitasking. Trust me multitasking will cause you to procrastinate, so just do one thing at a time.

  • Use the Pomodoro Technique: This technique involves working in focused 25-minute increments, followed by a 5-minute break. It helps me stay focused and avoid burnout.Do something rest, do something again rest.

  • Remove every Distractions: I identify common distractions, such as social media, videos or email, and eliminate them while I work. I use tools like website blockers or phone apps to help me stay focused.

  • Reward Myself*: I set small rewards for myself when I complete tasks or reach milestones. This helps motivate me to stay on track and provides a sense of accomplishment. You set dey try lol, get yourself a good treatment.

  • Practice Self-Compassion: I remember that procrastination is a common struggle, and it's okay to make mistakes. I don't beat myself up over procrastination – instead, I focus on moving forward and making progress.
I remember one big goal I had on hive was post everyday this year but unfortunately I slept off two time this year so far, I didn't beat up myself by blaming me, instead I celebrated my growth of keeping to my words.

  • Seek Accountability: I share my goals and progress with a friend or accountability partner. This helps me stay motivated and on track, as well as provides support when I need it.

In conclusion: my life was totally changed by these new ways of doing things, I have been able to overcome procrastination and achieve some of my goals. It's not always easy, but it's worth it.
