Why cash rewards for academic brilliance may harm students' motivation and well-being.

I don't agree that there should be a cash reward for academic brilliance because if we give a cash reward to students who top the class, the other children will feel bad because they will be thinking, Why can't they try harder so that they can also collect a cash reward?

If we are giving cash rewards to the top students so they to try to learn things for themselves, all they will be thinking about is how to collect cash rewards, and because of that, they won't focus on their academics.

Academic brilliance shows how the students are diligent in their academics, but rewarding them with money will divert their attention away from their academics. As you all know, there are advantages and disadvantages to cash rewards.

Advantages

Motivation: Cash rewards can motivate students to strive for academic excellence, especially those who are not naturally motivated. Cash rewards can provide the extra push they need, especially if they see how their fellow students are collecting cash rewards.

Encouragement: If we give cash rewards to brilliant students, it will encourage them to continue to perform well, and because of that, people will know them for their brilliant ways.

Opportunity: Implemented fairly, cash rewards can bring opportunities to all students so that they can benefit from them regardless of the background they come from.

Resilience: Cash rewards can help people recover quickly from difficulties or challenges. It can make people bounce back and even thrive despite facing difficult problems.

Disadvantages

Impact on motivation: There will be a problem that cash rewards can shift the focus of students from learning for their knowledge to learning for gain because they know if they top the class, there's a cash reward awaiting them.

Pressure: Cash rewards can lead students to have anxiety, depression, stress, and, lastly, fear of failure because they will think that if they don't pass, there will be no cash reward for them.

Long-term hard work: As cash rewards can boost students' academic performance, they can also lose motivation or academic performance if cash rewards are no longer available.

Therefore, to me, I don't think we need all these just because of the cash reward. Even if we want to give cash rewards for academic brilliance, there are some ways we can do it without giving them cash rewards, and the ways are:

We can celebrate the academic brilliance of brilliant students through certificates, public recognition, giving them awards, etc.

We can provide opportunities and resources for enrichment, such as scholarships, sponsorships, etc.

We can encourage a love for learning by fostering support and making them engage in an activity for inherent satisfaction rather than for any reward-giving.

To me, I will say no to cash rewards for the betterment of our children, so that they will not be learning what they want to learn just because of cash rewards.

This is my entry for Hive Learners Weekly Feature Contest Edition 118, "Cash reward for academic brilliance.".

Cash rewards for academic brilliance have both advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, there should be a balance so students don't get to depend on it to perform in their studies.

Yes, there should be a balance so that students won't depend on it just to perform well in their studies.
