Krakow's churches no.17 – Church of St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist

In Krakow, within the Old Town, there is a very even grid of streets that move away in each of the 4 parallel directions from the sides of the Main Market Square. This means that when walking around the Old Town, we have very representative long pedestrian routes that create very long architectural perspectives. However, there is one interesting place that disrupts this perpendicularly parallel layout of Krakow streets and this is the intersection of St. John's and St. Thomas' streets. Thanks to this, a picturesque curvature was created on St. Thomas' street, which in this ordered structure of Krakow streets will make us feel like we are in some narrow, winding street from the towns of the Mediterranean basin. And all this was created thanks to the church of St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist in Krakow. The Great Location of the city of Krakow under Magdeburg law took place in 1257 and since it was decided to bend the streets in this place, it means that there was a church in this place earlier. According to tradition, the temple was founded by Piotr Włostowic in the first half of the 12th century, while the first written mention of it appears in city records in 1308. Over the centuries, the building has been rebuilt and renovated many times, which has influenced its current appearance. The most significant reconstructions are the thorough reconstruction in the mid-17th century and another in the 1720s. In 1715, the temple was donated to the congregation of the Sisters of the Presentation and it remains in their possession to this day. Inside, the main focus is on the altar, which dates back to 1730 and contains a painting of Our Lady of St. John. I do not know if this is historical truth, but it is said that the painting was brought to Krakow by Prince Stanisław Radziwiłł from distant Spain. On the sides of the altar are figures of St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist, the patrons of the church. As a curiosity, we can point out the votive offerings hanging at the altar in the form of a pair of iron shackles with chains from the 18th century. The shackles come from the year 1633 when a miraculous event occurred, namely, a certain prisoner sentenced to death, who just before the punishment was to be imposed, had his shackles miraculously dropped. Such an event in olden times obviously meant the immediate acquittal of the convicted and the beginning of the cult of Our Lady of St. John as Our Lady of the Redemption of Slaves or Mother of Freedom.

W Krakowie w obrębie Starego Miasta istnieje bardzo równomierna siatka ulic oddalających się w każdym z 4 kierunków równoległych od boków Rynku Głównego. Powoduje to, że chodząc po Starym Mieście mamy bardzo reprezentatywne długie ciągi piesze które tworzą bardzo długie perspektywy architektoniczne. Jest jednak takie jedno ciekawe miejsce, które zaburza ten prostopadło równoległy układ ulic Krakowa i jest to właśnie skrzyżowanie ulic św. Jana i ulicy św. Tomasza. Dzięki temu na ulicy św. Tomasza powstał malowniczy wywijas, który w tej uporządkowanej strukturze Krakowskich ulic pozwoli nam poczuć się jak w jakiejś wąskiej krętej uliczce rodem z miasteczek basenu Morza Śródziemnego. A wszystko to powstało za sprawą kościoła św. Jana Chrzciciela i św. Jana Ewangelisty w Krakowie. Wielka Lokacja miasta Krakowa na prawie magdeburskim miała miejsce w 1257 roku i skoro w tym miejscu zdecydowano się powyginać ulice, to znaczy, że w tym miejscu kościół znajdował się już wcześniej. Zgodnie z tradycją świątynię ufundował Piotr Włostowic w pierwszej połowie XII wieku, natomiast pierwsze pisemne wzmianki o nim pojawiają się w księgach miejskich w roku 1308 roku. W ciągu wieków budowla była wielokrotnie przebudowywana i remontowana, co wpłynęło na jej obecny wygląd. Najbardziej znaczące przebudowy to gruntowna przebudowa z połowy XVII wieku i kolejna z lat 20 XVIII wieku. Świątynię w 1715 roku podarowano zgromadzeniu sióstr prezentek i jest on w posiadania aż do dzisiaj. We wnętrzu główną uwagę skupia się na ołtarzu, który, pochodzi z 1730 roku i znajduje się w nim obraz obraz Matki Bożej Świętojańskiej. Czy to prawda historyczna, to nie wiem, ale mówi się, że obraz został przywieziony do Krakowa przez księcia Stanisława Radziwiłła aż z odległej Hiszpanii. Po bokach ołtarza znajdują się figury św. Jana Chrzciciela i św. Jana Ewangelisty patronów kościoła. Jako ciekawostka wykazać można zawieszone przy ołtarzu wota w postaci pary żelaznych kajdan z łańcuchami z XVIII wieku.Kajdany pochodzą z roki 1633 kiedy doszło do cudownego zdarzenia, a mianowicie pewnemu skazanemu na śmierć więźniowi, który tuż przed wymierzeniem kary miał wezwać Maryi do pomocy i zlitowania się nad nim w cudowny sposób opadły kajdany. Takie zdarzenie w dawnych czasach w oczywisty sposób oznaczało natychmiastowe uniewinnienie skazanego i początek kultu Matki Bożej Świętojańskiej jako Matki Bożej od Wykupu Niewolników lub Matki Wolności.
