Podcasting Dreams Inspired by Jay Shetty
It was probably some morning, and I was searching for interesting things to listen to as I prepared for the day. I found On Purpose by Jay Shetty and was hooked by the first episode. I heard things profound, insights that were deep and thoughtful, and practicality in the tonality of his words. I felt endeared by just how adept this man was in his ability to understand people, interact with them, and offer them useful ways to live better as a person.
Now, every morning as I go through my routines, I often have Jay Shetty in my ears, sharing from his well of knowledge on how to live better. He shares truths, ideas, and methods for being better and living on purpose in diverse aspects of life. He is a person I admire, and he pops up in some conversations that I have with people—at least, the things he teaches.
As a result of listening to him so much, I have grown to develop a keen interest in podcasting and probably doing something similar to what he does. I am not savvy with my knowledge of human interactions, nor do I always know the best way to approach certain things, but having a microphone in front of me and talking comes naturally to me. Heck, it's somewhat part of the reason why I started the 9ja Show in Hive Naija.
As a matter of fact, I felt like I really wanted to start a podcast, so much so that I joined NaPodPoMo (National Podcast Post Month) by @epodcaster. It's a month-long marathon that encourages people to explore the art of podcasting or refine their skills by making entries all through the month of November, beginner or experienced.
I was a little bit underprepared for the whole challenge; however, I failed to take the big step of starting as I self-deprecated a lot and never even participated once. I just stayed inside my shell for most of it, and nothing happened. Nonetheless, the desire to start a podcast someday still remains.
My reason for starting a podcast isn't to just talk, per se; essentially, journaling my thoughts and sharing my experiences vocally is a much different experience than writing and documenting it all as texts. It's a whole different feeling that I find enthralling.
On many occasions, I would catch myself making audio recordings about my thoughts and feelings. A good number of them are conversations with myself on the way forward; some are random "notes to myself," others are rants. Speaking, in essence, is something that I enjoy doing. Yes, the girlfriend has to deal with a lot of that side of me occasionally—but she tells me she loves it, so I fire on most times. Boy, oh boy, do I find it exhilarating sometimes to speak... Surely, I listen too.
It's a new year, and part of my aspiration is to start the podcast at some point. It's a little bit rough this month with the new job that I do, so it'll have to be much later. I don't have it all planned out yet, although I reckon that I should by now.
I learned that having guests can make podcasts more engaging for the listeners and even the speaker(s). I have considered this and would definitely like to have guest speakers to discuss it with. And this is where it all connects: I would like to someday have Jay Shetty come on to my show to have a discussion and listen to his thoughts and insights in person.
There's a lot that I have learned from him and even about him. One aspect that I admire about him is the type of relationship that he and his wife, Radhi, have. It's not just talk when he teaches about having better relationships with one's partner; it is evident in their conversations that they have something truly beautiful, although there aren't that many episodes with her around.
I imagine that if I had Jay Shetty on my show someday, I would ask him certain questions that I haven't heard him explicitly answer in the episodes that I have listened to. Things pertaining to relationships, interactions with people, and navigating life are specific to my experiences. Until that time, I guess I have to start the podcast first.

Listening to podcasts is good, especially when the right people speak.

Please do! I encourage a bit of easing into things with perhaps a stand alone audio series. Consider a multi-part series on a specific topic of interest. Think of that topic like a book or a movie. In a book we start with setting the foundation of the series, the goals of the series, what listeners will get from listening to the series, and of course an introduction of you as the host of the series.
Each episode is like a chapter in the book. It breadcrumbs listeners on an audio journey where they get to hear your perspective and experience with your unique voice on the series topic. At the end of the series you recap the entire series and complete the story.
It can be as simple as that.
If you have several topics of interest and aren't sure which one should be your long form podcast, a standalone series on each topic will inform you both in audience interest and your own. Sometimes the idea is good, but after you begin to host a podcast you may find that your interest was more short term than long term. So in essence you are workshopping your podcast ideas with these standalone series. Each one represents you well and is a complete work all in of itself.
When you find the topic which holds your interest and has audience interest then you can turn that into an ongoing podcast.
If you wind up hosting an interview show, save a spot on your podcast guest list for me. I would be honored to be a part of your podcasting journey.

I never thought of it like this. It's an excellent way for me to start. I was lost for what to start with and how to continue; didn't want to start and then stop.
So, I could basically just take it that I am writing a book, and that way I would have better direction. The standalone series sounds alright too. It'll be a workshop, like you said, so I am open to anything that'll bring me forward.
I really appreciate you coming through, Jennifer. And, most definitely, it would be such a delight to have you on my show some day. I hope you're having a nice day.
You're welcome! I think podcasting is a great way to share your mission and message with the world.
I think so too! And that's why I'd like to hone. I admire your works, too.
I’m definitely expecting your podcast soon : )
Hopefully, it won't be long. Thanks.
I think I've heard you speak about Jay Shetty before. He sounds like such an intriguing person now you've written about him. I think I'd specifically go to listen to his podcasts just to feel what you say he and his wife has. But as you're a good judge of character and personality, I don't doubt I'd feel the same way. Really sweet, Minion. !LUV 💕

I have learned a lot from him listening to his shows. Knowing how keen and tactful you are about interacting with people, I think he'll fall on your good side.
This is the next episode of his show that I am going to listen to—next morning, most likely. You may consider it whenever you'd like to indulge yourself.
Thank you for !LUV always, Fangy.

I personally think doing shows with people your most comfortable with helps the podcast feel more natural.
Hopefully, you would find Jay Shetty to be as interesting as I see him.
Nice find! I like Jay Shetty. I've listened to him on occasion too. Wonderful that you were inspired to start a podcast, Jay. I love how intentional you are about everything. You walk the walk. Yay! I am glad that Sam actually like him. Warms my heart.
It may be like I am stalling for nothing, but I'd like to clear up some things on my plate for now. But I am actively thinking about it everyday, and on how I'd like it to be like. You'd sure be one of the first to know when it's live—so I can know what you think about it early.
Makes me grin knowing that you think of me as intentional. I try to not make my life loud, but I would say that I am pretty blessed to have such an amazing woman who's willing to ride all the way with me, just as I am with her.
I hope you're having a great day, Sam.
Nice! I look forward to a tag when it's ready 🤗
Blessed 💗
