The Pope’s Exorcist
I was about to write this post, when I suddenly remembered a funny experience. I was with a group of people, and we were talking about horror movies. The conversation centered around horror films that scared the shit out of us. I mentioned mine, wanting to hear whether they found it scary or not. Collectively, they all said it wasn’t scary to them and you know what’s crazier? I agreed with them to feel among.😂
I love the thrill that comes with watching horror movies. Most especially those that have everything to do with the paranormal experiences. So, when I saw a roommate watching The Pope’s Exorcist, I just knew I had to. I watched the film and boy was I tormented for days.

If you’ve watched The Pope’s Exorcist, you’d know it’s about this family that moved to a new house, which once held a church. After an explosion which was caused by construction workers, breaking through the sodium filled room in the basement, their son wanders there, and becomes possessed.
Watching this as no newbie to horror movies, I got to a point where I had to whisper prayers while watching. There’s the fact that the demon that was cited in the film was one I’ve read of before and also, I was in a new hostel as at the time of watching it. I had always heard of how haunted hostels could be, so watching this at a time the hostel’s electricity was down, was complete torture.
If you’ve read a lot of spiritual documentaries or you’re familiar with the book of Sarah in the Bible, the name Asmodeus might ring a bell. In this film, the fact that this wasn’t the first time I was hearing about the demon, made the film creepier than it should have been. I went about my hostel in fear, throughout those days. I found sleeping in my bed alone, a problem.

I am very quick to dismiss fear from horror movies. I just remind myself that it’s all acting but I couldn’t even tell myself that here. It all seemed too real for me to dismiss. For a film like this, to make the impact that it did, it wouldn’t be right to not commend the acting. The little boy that played the role of the possessed character, had me in awe. How he skillfully delivered that darkness and trauma that was required for the characters was beautiful. If the aim of the film was to make viewers shudder on their seats, they sure achieved that with me. I was scared for days. Sweating under the blanket, and still refusing to take it off, all for fear.
I remember one scene where a character literally sank into the bed. It was an illusion, that I admit, but the Nigerian in me, wasn’t comfortable watching that while also lying in bed. It’s been over two years since I watched this film, and no horror film has topped it so far. Allowing it live rent free in my head.
The prompt says to make our responses as scary as possible but sadly, It’s past 1am here in my country. I can’t risk my imagination running wild with a movie like this one.
Thanks for reading.

I've watched this movie and the producer/director achieved their purpose if scaring people was the point. Haha.
This got me laughing. The Nigeria in us will take it personal.
