The newscaster

I'll like to believe my life in high school was my most interesting era, and one where I've made the most memories so far. From friendships to conflicts to teacher favourites to competitions, the memories were worth it and they're all part of the past that has shaped my present and will, my future. My high school experiences were in two sections because I changed schools at one point but they were both worthy experiences.

At the school I started out with, I was termed Newscaster. There, we held an event every Friday where all students assemble to listen to the happenings in the past week. I was the one assigned the task of reading the news every Friday. Hence, the nickname Newscaster. This gained me a lot of popularity then and coupled with the fact that I represented the school for competitions, and won many, all eyes were on me. This endeared me to a lot of teachers - my English teacher most especially, who always lent me books from her collections every now and then.

Being the newscaster in a school as populated as that made me known by almost, if not everyone in the school. There were times and situations where I would meet an unfamiliar person and before I introduced myself, they made it known that they knew me already from my newscasting sessions. I had a passion for newscasting and it gained me the popularity back then.

Also, among my peers, I was a very fast writer. And given that I was closer to the teachers, when they decided to not write notes on the board for us to copy, I was the one that was assigned to write from their notes first and distribute it among the other students. For every level, we had minimum of four branches. So, the teachers usually referred students from other branches to my class to collect notes. This earned me more popularity among my classmates because everyone wanted their notes updated as soon as possible and to achieve that, they simply needed to be closer to me and access the notes through me directly.

Well, I changed schools and in this new school, there was no opportunity for newscasting. Nothing of the sort was held there. Then, I was in my senior years and at first, I thought to let my newscasting spirit die down but the idea didn't sit right with me. Public speaking is a skill I believed everyone should be prepared for, if not familiar with. I introduced it to the Press Club and they welcomed the idea but other students weren't open to the idea of public speaking. So the principal then, decided to make it mandatory that everybody gets to speak in front of other students. She made a roaster for every student in the school to give a speech on a selected topic of their choice, every day of the term.

Many were unhappy with the idea and knowing i was the brain behind it, they channeled their dissatisfaction towards me. Those that were open to it, accepted the change and some got closer to me wanting to know more about it.

I was popular in both schools I attended and although, it earned me dislikes from the minority, I never hated my life in high school. I believe, newscaster or not, fast writer or not, high school would have been memorable.

This is my entry to one of the #Weekendengagement questions by @galenkp.
