Our best-thing-ship

I stared as you walked in.

Men with your aura wore black to make them appear more lethal. But here you were, in a red customized suit, a matching pant and a black shirt tucked gracefully into the hem of your trousers, walking in with all that mesmerizing gloriousness.

Oh, how I wished you were here for me. But you seem to have come here for something else which seems important to you. From the look on your face, I can tell.

You take a seat two tables to my right and that's when you notice me. Our eyes meet and the feeling is eclectic. We're a match.

I sit at my table, fiddling with my dinner. I wasn't really hungry but dinner is something I never skip. And here I am, with your eyes boring holes into me. We're going to be the couple of the decades to come and I know it. Already.

We haven't even had our first conversation but I know we're in love. You wouldn't be a scaredy cat like Mitch, You won't be a mummy's boy like James, you wouldn't go around cheating and trying to hide it because you don't want to get away from me like Scott. You will be perfect for me and I for you. We will make babies, be the couple everyone is envious of and I won't have to kill you like I did the other three guys.

'May I?' You say, taking a seat on the empty seat across me.

How I've looked forward to this moment! It hasn't been thirty minutes since you walked in but it feels like I've waited for so long. Your voice is disappointing. Not as breathtaking as I had expected but I don't mind. You're flawed and I appreciate that.

'Sure' I respond with a smile, gesturing towards the seat.

'What's a pretty lady like you doing, eating alone all by yourself?'

"Isn't it to your advantage that I'm eating alone here?"

"Oh. Well, it does favour me, I must say since I get an opportunity to talk to you. I'm Rome. Nice to sit at your table" He says, extending his hand over for a handshake

"I'm Leira. The pleasure is all mine"

"Leira, You're done having your dinner, I'm done having mine. I think some air will do us good. Mind taking a walk with me?"

"How sure am I that you're not a murderer or something?"

"If I was, I sure as hell wouldn't come talking to you with all these cameras around' You respond with a chuckle and I fall harder because you're not the murderer. I am.

I grab my clutch and stand up. Ready to start one of the best journeys of my life. Our own best-thing-ship.

We leave the restaurant and we walk towards the left. The road that leads to my street and hopefully yours.

You are talking about the restaurant food and many other things.

"I once ordered a fruit pizza smeared with chocolate. The disgust evident on the waiter's face was so iconic. I'll never forget." You say and we both laugh over it even though it doesn't seem funny to me.

You keep talking about yourself but I don't mind because I like listening to you talk.

We talk about your music taste. You're a rap guy and I'm a R&B/soul music girlie. Not a perfect match but that's another thing I don't mind. I'm pretty sure we'll work it out.

We're still talking about music tastes when you say 'Never mind. You won't understand cause you're a girl'.

I'm appalled. If I weren't so attracted to you by now, I would have been plotting ways to save other innocent souls from you but I want to believe that's a mistake. I let that slide and soon we're talking about other things. We talk about our favourite pastime shows.

While you enjoy watching football and animal documentaries, I enjoy watching crime shows and podcasts.

'A crime girlie you are then?' You say and I raise both my hands in a gesture of surrender.

I talk about the current economic situation of the country. And how nothing seems to have changed. I point out that there haven't even been any female contesting for a presidential election in the country and your answer to that is 'The women in this city are weaklings. They just like talking about injustice and trying to prove their worth. They make unnecessary noise.'

You're beginning to get on my nerves. I try to ignore it but you aren't helping because you still open your mouth to say 'Reminds me of my crazy ex-girlfriend. She didn't like rap or hard music but she was loud in her own way. Always bitching about whatever injustice was meted out to people and trying to fight for justice.'

'Stop' I say very silently, although I'm not sure you heard me. You continue rambling on and on about how you tried to control your ex-girlfriend.

I want to tell you what I did to my ex-boyfriends who made these mistakes you're making now but you might begin to call for help if I do. You might even call me a sicko. And I can't let you do that. I look around for any hidden cameras. There's none. We're in an alleyway and it's dark.

I can't bear to hear you ramble on and on and I loose it. I slow down. Make sure you're in front of me. I hit the back of your head with my clutch. Nature is on my side because you turn to face me as the back of your head hits the floor. I can't check for your pulse with my bare hands otherwise, you'll be laced with my fingerprints. I need to get away from you as quickly as possible and establish an alibi.

I pick up a stray biscuit rap from the floor, check for a pulse, there's none. I fish out the little dose of diamorphine I always carry around for situations like this. Use the biscuit wrapper to lift your upper lip and inject the fluid into your gum.

It'll be in your body by the time you're found and the police will believe you were under the influence of drugs when it happened. The pressure from my clutch will appear like it was caused by you hitting your head on the floor.

Now, I have to go establish my alibi. I call Nelly, my closest friend and ask if I can come over. She says okay and I scurry over to her house. From her house, we both head over to Dominos in her car. In view of all the city cameras. The hidden and open ones.

I leave you there for the police to find you. I couldn't have someone like you to myself and I couldn't let you go into the world and ruin others. I hope you understand Rome. I'm doing the right thing.

Maybe in another life, you wouldn't have this mentality and our best-thing-ship will work out.

I love you

A book like this would be very good to read. Although I think I've read something of this nature. It's titled YOU by Caroline Kepnes. You can check it out

Thanks! I watched YOU series on Netflix and I feel like this text has a similar vibe.

This is an amazing story, @oluchi31. You really have a gift for spinning a tale, creating suspense, and creating an excellent story arc!

There's only one problem, which is that we don't accept stories portraying violence in The Ink Well. This story is not at all overly violent or bloody, but we just wanted to make sure you're aware of the rules, and that a story involving murder unfortunately crosses the line, even if it's told in a fairly tame way.

Please see our community guidelines at the top of our community homepage, as well as the article describing our stance on violence, which can be found in our catalog of storytelling tips. Additionally, we provide a reminder about this rule in the guidelines for our story prompts.

Thank you!

Thank you so much. I am aware of the rules against portraying violence but I didn't think that murder generally wasn't accepted. I tried my best to tame the violence so it aligns with the community guidelines and at the same time bring my idea to the fore. Thank you very much for the reminder
